Introduction

The University of Central Florida’s (UCF) men’s Hockey Team is a new addition to the school’s athletic program. The team will compete in Division III of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and will play its home games at the Winter Springs Ice Complex.

The UCF Hockey team is the brainchild of coach Ryan Clausen, who started the program from scratch. Clausen, who played hockey at UCF and has coached the sport for 15 years, is confident that the team will be successful. “We have a lot of local talent and support from Knights fans,” he said. “We are confident that we can build a winning team ”

The Team

The UCF Men’s hockey team competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The ACHA is a club league and is not affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The ACHA has three divisions, with UCF playing in Division 3. The Knights play their home games at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den, located about 15 minutes from campus.

UCF began playing hockey in the fall of 2012, and the team has seen a lot of success in its short history. In just their second season, the Knights finished as runners-up in the ACHA National Championship game. The team has also qualified for the ACHA National Tournament in each of its first four seasons.

The Schedule

The 2017 season for the University of Central Florida’s Hockey Team will be the first in program history. In any given Home game the Fieldhouse is mostly populated by students. This is to be expected as the school offers free admission to any students with a valid ID. The atmosphere at these games is electric, with the fans representing a wide variety of interests. Some are there for the love of the sport, others are there to see some good old fashioned violence, and others still are there just for the free food Regardless of the reason, most everyone in attendance is having a good time.

The Rivalries

UCF hockey has been a source of pride and joy for Knights fans since the team’s inception in 2016. The team has had great success in its short history, winning the Atlantic Hockey conference championship in 2018 and 2019. UCF has also made two appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, in 2019 and 2020.

UCF’s main rivals are the University of Florida Gators and the University of South Florida Bulls. The Knights have a great record against both of these teams, with a combined record of 17-3-1 against them.

The rivalry with the Gators is especially heated, as UCF and Florida are both located in Orlando. The two teams play each other twice a year, with the winner taking home the “Orlando Cup”. UCF currently leads the series 3-1-0.
