WCC Baseball: A Quick Overview

Some of the top Division I Baseball programs in the nation are found in the West Coast Conference. The WCC is made up of nine schools, all located in California, Oregon, or Washington. The conference was founded in 1952 and has been a powerhouse ever since.

The WCC is home to some of the best players and teams in the country. In recent years the conference has sent numerous players to the MLB Draft and seen several of its teams ranking among the best in the nation.

Here are some quick facts and stats you should know about WCC Baseball

-The WCC has nine teams: Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary’s, San Diego San Francisco Santa Clara and Brigham Young

-The WCC is a baseball-only conference; it does not sponsor any other sports.

-The conference is made up of private schools; there are no public universities in the WCC.

-Since 1952, the WCC has sent 279 players to Major League Baseball (MLB).

-Seven WCC teams have made it to the College World Series Gonzaga (twice), Loyola Marymount (three times), Pepperdine (twice), San Francisco (twice), Santa Clara (once), and Stanford (once). BYU has also made it to the College World Series on multiple occasions, but was not a member of the WCC at those times.

As the 2018 West Coast Conference baseball season winds down, it’s time to take a closer look at the numbers that have defined the conference this year.

Entering the final weekend of play, Pepperdine sits atop the standings with a 14-4 record in conference play The Waves have been led by their pitching staff, which boasts a league-best 2.73 ERA.

Offensively, San Diego has been the class of the conference, leading the way in both batting average (.290) and runs scored (200). The Toreros have also been solid on the mound, posting a 3.24 ERA as a team.

Loyola Marymount has been one of the surprise teams in the conference this season, currently sitting in third place with a 12-6 record. The Lions have gotten it done with pitching and defense, as they boast the second-lowest ERA in the conference (2.81) and have committed the fewest errors (19).

At the other end of the spectrum is Santa Clara who sits in last place at 4-14. The Broncos have struggled on both sides of the ball, ranking last in both team batting average (.229) and team ERA (5.56).

The West Coast Conference is full of competitive teams, and the baseball standings are often close. Here’s a deeper look at some of the numbers behind the scenes.

WCC Baseball: The Top Team

As the end of the regular season approaches, there is only one team that has clinched a spot in the WCC Baseball Tournament and that is the University of San Diego USD has had an amazing season with a record of 36-15 and a conference record of 18-6. They are currently on a 9 game Winning Streak and have won 16 of their last 17 games.

Junior second baseman Dylan Covey has been leading the team offensively with a batting average of .361, 7 home runs and 46 RBIs. On the mound, senior right-hander Calvin Drummond has been dominating with 10 wins, a 2.48 ERA, and 94 strikeouts. The Toreros will be looking to carry this momentum into the postseason as they look to win their first WCC title since 2011.

WCC Baseball: The Bottom Team

The bottom team in the WCC standings will be the team that finishes in last place. The team that finishes in last place will have a record of 0-9. The bottom team will be eliminated from the WCC tournament and will not have a chance to compete for the championship.

WCC Baseball: The Most Improved Team

In 2019, the West Coast Conference baseball team made huge strides. The team went from a 7-11 record in conference play to a 13-5 record, good for second place in the conference. The team also improved its overall record from 19-29 to 31-21.

One of the biggest reasons for the team’s success was its pitching staff. The team’s ERA dropped from 5.59 to 4.32, and the staff allowed nearly two fewer runs per game. Additionally, the team’s opponents’ batting average against dropped from .270 to .249.

The team’s offense also improved, scoring nearly a run more per game than it did in 2018. The WCC Baseball Team will look to continue its success in 2020 and beyond.

WCC Baseball: The Team to Watch

The WCC baseball team is one of the most talented and deep college baseball teams in the country. They have a ton of experience and are led by some of the best players in the conference. Here are some stats you need to know about them:

-They have a .321 team batting average which is 1st in the WCC
-They have a .984 Fielding percentage which is 1st in the WCC
-They have a 3.13 ERA, which is 1st in the WCC
-They have allowed just 61 runs in conference play, which is 1st in the WCC
-Their +57 run differential is 1st in the WCC
-They have stolen 53 bases, which is 1st in the WCC
-They have hit 37 home runs which is 2nd in the WCC
-Their pitching staff has struck out 341 batters, which is 2nd in the WCC

WCC Baseball: The Player to Watch

In baseball, there are a lot of statistics that can be used to measure a player’s performance. However, there are a few key stats that can give you a good idea of how well a player is performing. Here are the WCC baseball stats you need to know:

Batting Average (AVG): This measures how often a batter gets a hit. The higher the number, the better the hitter is.

On-base Percentage (OBP): This measures how often a batter reaches base It includes hits, walks, and hit-by-pitches. Again, the higher the number, the better the hitter is.

Slugging Percentage (SLG): This measures the Total Bases a hitter accumulates per at-bat. It’s calculated by adding together their singles, doubles, triples, and home run totals and dividing by their at-bats. A high Slugging percentage indicates a slugging percentage (SLG): This measures tendency to get extra-base hits.

OPS (On-base Plus Slugging): This is simply AVG + SLG and is used as another measure of overall hitting ability.

The player to watch in the WCC is Kit Scheele from BYU. He led the conference in batting average (.408), on-base percentage (.458), slugging percentage (.667), and OPS (1.125). He’s also tied for second in home runs with 5. So far this season, he’s been one of the best hitters in the conference and should continue to be one of the Top Players to watch in future games.

WCC Baseball: The Pitcher to Watch

In WCC baseball, there is one pitcher that you need to know about. His name is Jake McGee, and he is a left-handed pitcher for the University of Virginia McGee has been dominant this season, posting a 0.96 ERA in 19 appearances (14 starts). He has struck out 96 batters in 96 innings pitched and he has only allowed four walks. McGee has also thrown two shutouts this season.
