Introducing the 2019 Whitworth Baseball Roster

The Whitworth baseball team is looking to rebound after a tough 2018 season. Head Coach Matt Blasco has announced the program’s 2019 roster, which features 27 returnees and 13 newcomers.

The roster is highlighted by a talented group of seniors, led by All-West Conference selections Ian Sievern (outfield) and Kyle Gentry (pitcher). Other key returnees include pitchers Nate Loomis and Ryan King, infielders Chase Illig and Zander Clouse, and outfielders Blake Frampton and Parker Yssel.

The 13 newcomers include 12 freshmen and one transfer. The freshman class is highlighted by a pair of local products in catcher Sam Hultberg (Mt. Spokane HS) and infielder/outfielder Nate Carroll ( Ferris HS). Also look for contributions from freshmen pitchers Jake Welch, Tate Budnick and Alex Garcia, infielder Tony Adrade, outfielder Brock Gates and utility player Tanner Hurgrave. The lone transfer is junior pitcher Logan Miller, who comes to Whitworth from Clark College.

Senior captain Matt Ferdig will anchor the outfield in center field. A two-time all-conference selection, Ferdig is one of the best defenders in the NWC and an excellent base runner. He batted .306 last season with 21 RBIs and a team-high 12 stolen bases

Junior college transfer Tanner Haney is expected to start in left field A native of Spokane, Haney was an all-conference performer at North Idaho College last season, batting .357 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.

Sophomore Chase Knickerbocker will start in right field. A key player off the bench as a freshman, Knickerbocker hit .289 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in limited action. He has a chance to be one of the breakout stars of the 2019 season.

As any baseball fan knows, the catcher is one of the most important players on the field. They are responsible for calling the game, working with the pitchers, and running the defense. They also have to be able to hit and catch, of course!

The Whitworth catchers are a talented group that features a mix of youth and experience. Here’s a closer look at each of them:

-Sophomore Alec Johnson is a transfer from Washington State University He is a big and physical catcher who brings a lot of power to the plate. His arm is also very strong, which will be helpful in controlling opposing base runners.

-Junior Riley Stockton is a local product from Spokane, WA. He played his High School ball at Ferris high school before coming to Whitworth. He is an excellent defensive catcher with a good arm. He is also a patient hitter who has a good understanding of the strike zone

-Senior Parker Hudgins is in his third year with the team and has been one of its most consistent contributors during that time. He hits for average and has some pop in his bat as well. He is also a very solid defender behind the plate.

-Sophomore Dawson Dombek rounds out the group of catchers on the roster. He came to Whitworth after playing his freshman season at Yakima Valley Community College He is an athletic catcher with good speed for his position. His arm is also very strong, which will help him control opposing base runners

Nate is hoping to continue the family tradition by playing baseball at the collegiate level.

Third baseman Matt Nelson’s father played minor league ball for the Minnesota Twins organization. Matt has always looked up to his dad and has worked hard to make his own dreams of playing Collegiate Baseball come true.
