WVU baseball Pitching Staff
After a great regular season the West Virginia University baseball team is headed to the Big 12 tournament. A big reason for their success has been their pitching staff.
The Mountaineers have a team ERA of 3.51, which is good for second in the conference. They also rank second in strikeouts with 419. Their opponents are only batting .234 against them, which is the best mark in the Big 12.
WVU will look to their pitching staff to lead them to a successful run in the Big 12 tournament and beyond.
Wvu Baseball Hitting Lineup
This season, Wvu baseball is led by a strong hitting lineup. The team’s top five hitters are all batting over .300, and they have a combined total of 37 home runs
The team’s leading hitter is junior second baseman Jack Davis, who is batting .345 with six home runs and 32 RBIs. Right behind him is senior first baseman Andrew McCutchen who is hitting .333 with eight homers and 29 RBIs.
In the middle of the lineup is junior third baseman Dylan Daugherty, who is batting .316 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs. Senior catcher Michael Porter is hitting .304 with seven homers and 26 RBIs, and sophomore shortstop Carter Johnson rounds out the top five with a .301 average and four homers.
The Mountaineers will look to their potent offense to carry them through the Big 12 tournament, where they are seeded fifth. They will take on fourth-seeded TCU in the first round on Wednesday, May 22.
Wvu Baseball Infielders
The West Virginia University Mountaineers baseball team is heading to the Big 12 tournament! Here’s a look at the team’s talented infielders who will be key to the Mountaineers’ success in the tournament.
First baseman Ivan Gonzalez is one of the top power hitters on the team. He leads the Mountaineers with 12 Home Runs and 50 RBIs. Second baseman Tevrin Garland is a versatile player who can hit for average and power. He’s second on the team with a .328 batting average and has also chipped in 5 home runs and 36 RBIs.
At third base, Chase Illig has been steady all season long He’s hitting .305 with 4 home runs and 36 RBIs. Shortstop Alec Burns is another versatile player who can hit for both average and power. He leads the team with a .345 batting average and has also slugged 8 home runs and drives in 38 runs.
The Mountaineers will need strong performances from all of their infielders if they want to make a run at the Big 12 tournament title.
WVU Baseball Outfielders
The WVU Baseball Team is heading to the Big 12 tournament this week and will be playing their first game on Wednesday, May 24 at approximately 2:00 pm EST. The Mountaineers are the number 6 seed in the tournament and will be facing off against the 3rd seed Baylor Bears
WVU’s success this season has been led by their strong outfield play. All three starters in the outfield – junior Darius Hill, senior Brandon White, and freshman Ike Schlessinger – are batting over .300 on the season. They have combined for 27 home runs and 83 RBIs, which is nearly half of the team’s total offensive production.
The Mountaineers will need to continue to rely on their outfielders if they want to have a chance to win the conference tournament and make it to the NCAA tournament
Wvu Baseball Gameplan
WVU baseball is set to take on Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday, May 22. Here’s a look at the gameplan for the Mountaineers as they look to make a run in the conference tournament
Pitching:
WVU will most likely start senior right-hander Michael Grove (4-3, 3.41 ERA) on the mound. Grove has been one of the most consistent pitchers for the Mountaineers this season, and he’s coming off a strong start against TCU in which he allowed just one run in six innings.
Offense:
The Mountaineers will need to be aggressive at the plate against Baylor pitching. WVU has shown that it can put up runs in bunches, so getting some early momentum could be key for the Mountaineers. Look for senior designated hitter Marques Inman to be a big factor in the WVU offense; Inman leads the team with a .359 batting average and 17 RBIs.
WVU Baseball: Keys to Victory
In order for the Mountaineers to have success in the Big 12 tournament, they will need to do a few things well.
First and foremost, West Virginia must pitch well. In order for any team to win in a tournament-style format, it must receive quality starts from its pitchers. The Mountaineers have been very fortunate in this department this season. On the year, WVU’s starters own an impressive 3.14 ERA. If the Mountaineers want to make a run in the Big 12 tournament, that number will need to stay low.
West Virginia will also need to score runs in bunches. In Tournament baseball one or two runs might not be enough to get the job done. The Mountaineers are no strangers to this type of play, as they average nearly seven runs per game. If West Virginia can keep up its offensive production, it will give itself a great chance to win games in the Big 12 tournament.
Lastly, the Mountaineers must play with energy and enthusiasm. This is something that has been lacking at times during conference play If West Virginia can come into the Conference Tournament with a sense of urgency, it will give itself a much better chance at success.
