YCP Baseball is back and better than ever: Why the program fell off and how it’s been revived
After a 25-year hiatus, the York College of Pennsylvania (YCP) baseball program is back and better than ever. Why did the program fall off, and how has it been revived?
In the 1990s, York was one of the top baseball programs in Division III The team made the playoffs eight times in 10 years, including a run to the College World Series in 1994. But then the bottom fell out. The team went 18-32 in 2000 and did not win more than 20 games in a single season over the next 15 years. In 2015, the team went 6-24 and finished last in its conference.
But now, under new Head Coach Travis Pearce, York is back on track. In Pearce’s first season at YCP, the team went 27-10 and won its first conference championship since 1998. The team also made it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2000.
What caused York’s Baseball Program to fall off? And how has it been revived?
The biggest reason for York’s decline was a lack of funding. In the 1990s, York was able to attract top talent with scholarships and other financial incentives that are common at bigger schools but rare at small schools like YCP. But when budget cuts hit the school in the early 2000s, those scholarships were among the first things to go. As a result, York was no longer able to compete with other schools for top talent.
The decline of YCP’s baseball program also coincided with changes in NCAA rules that favored larger schools. In 2003, Division III teams were allowed to offer athletic scholarships for the first time. This gave bigger schools a significant recruiting advantage over small schools like YCP, which could only offer non-athletic scholarships
The revival of YCP’s Baseball Program began with a change in leadership. In 2015, Travis Pearce was hired as head coach Pearce is a York native who played on York’s 1994 College World Series team. He was also an Assistant Coach at Division I Bowling Green State University from 2006 to 2014.
Pearce recruited extensively throughout Pennsylvania and neighboring states to find talented players who might have been overlooked by bigger schools. He also established relationships with High School coaches and Scouting directors to make sure that YCP was getting noticed by professional scouts. Finally, he worked hard to raise money to restore some of the scholarship money that had been cut in previous years.
Thanks to Pearce’s efforts, YCP’s baseball program is once again competitive both on and off the field
