The NBA was founded in 1946 by a group of six men, including future president of the United States Bob Cousy. The league is now worth $35 billion and has over 1000 employees.

The birth of the NBA- 1946

In 1946, the Basketball Association of America was formed. The first season of the BAA began in November of that year. There were 11 teams in the league: the New York Knicks Boston Celtics Philadelphia Warriors Detroit Pistons Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, Washington Capitols, Atlanta Hawks (formerly the Tri-Cities Blackhawks), St. Louis Bombers, and Minneapolis Lakers (now the Los Angeles Lakers). The first game was played on November 5th between the Knicks and Steelers at Madison Square Garden The Knicks won 68-66.

The early years of the NBA- 1947 to 1950

The early years of the NBA were full of excitement and experimentation. The league was founded in 1947 as a merger between the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL). The new league had 17 teams in its inaugural season, with New York, Boston, and Philadelphia as the most represented cities.

The early NBA was full of statistical oddities and little parity. The 1948-49 season was only 50 games long, while the 1949-50 season was a whopping 72 games long. There were 24 teams in the league by 1950, but that number would quickly contract to 11 by 1953. Some teams played as few as 28 games in a season!

Stats from this era are understandably incomplete, but what data we do have is fascinating. George Mikan the 6’10” center for the Minneapolis Lakers, averaged 27.4 points per game in 1946-47, an incredible number for that time period. Bob Cousy, who would go on to be one of the greatest point guards ever, averaged just 7.6 points per game as a rookie for the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in 1950-51. Wilt Chamberlain one of the most dominant players in history, did not even enter the league until 1959!

The NBA expands- 1951 to 1960

In 1946, the Basketball Association of America was founded. The first season was the 1947-48 season. There were 11 teams in the league. In 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association

In 1951, the NBA expanded to 17 teams with the addition of the Minneapolis Lakers, New York Knicks Indiana Pacers and Rochester Royals.

In 1960, the NBA expanded again to 10 teams with the addition of the Chicago Packers (now the Washington Wizards), Cleveland Cavaliers Los Angeles Lakers and San Francisco Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors).

The NBA goes global- 1961 to present

In 1961, the NBA expand with the addition of the Chicago Packers (now the Washington Wizards), who became the league’s ninth franchise. The Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns joined the NBA in 1968 as part of the ABA-NBA merger The league added four ABA teamsthe Indiana Pacers San Antonio Spurs, Kentucky Colonels (disbanded in 1976) and Denver Nuggetsin 1976 to bring its total number of franchises to 22.

In 1979, the league added two more expansion franchises, the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets raising the number of teams to 24. By 1981, at least one franchise from each state was playing in the NBA. That year, the Boston Celtics returned to prominence after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in six games in a rematch of the previous year’s Finals.

During his tenure as commissioner, David Stern oversaw several expansions and changes that increased both popularity and profit for the NBA. In 1980, Stern negotiated a merge between NBA and ABA which saw four ABA franchises join NBA: Indiana Pacers San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and New York Nets (now Brooklyn). This increased number of teams to 22.

In 1984, he brought about a Draft Lottery system to give all non-playoff making teams an equal chance at winning first overall draft pick It was first used during 1985 Draft where Patrick Ewing was selected by New York Knicks

Later on July 1 1986, Stern announced that Charlotte would get an expansion team which would begin play during 1988-89 season; this became Charlotte Hornets while another team would start play during 1989-90 season later became Miami Heat This raised number of teams in NBA to 27.

Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves were later added as part of NBAs 30th anniversary celebration in 1989 taking total number of teams to 29. Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors were later added as part 1995 expansion which saw two Canadian teams joining NBA taking total count to 31 Franchises. In 2004 Charlotte Bobcats were welcomed into fold as 32nd Franchise

The NBA today present day

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional men’s Basketball league in North America composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is widely considered to be the premier men’s Professional Basketball league in the world.

The regular season runs from October through April, with each team playing 82 games. The NBA playoffs start in April, featuring 16 teams from the league’s conference who compete for the NBA Championship The winning team of the NBA Finals receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
