2001 Arizona Basketball The Aftermath

The 2001 Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team represented the University of Arizona in the college basketball season of 2000-2001. The team was led by head coach Lute Olson and played their Home Games at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona. They finished the season 27-7, 13-5 in the Pac-10 to finish in a tie for second place. As a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament they defeated South Alabama and Wake Forest before losing to Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen.

After an impressive run to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight in 2000, expectations were high for the Wildcats heading into the 2001 campaign. The team was ranked No. 4 in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ preseason polls, and they were tabbed as a preseason favorite to win both the Pac-10 Regular Season and tournament titles. However, Arizona would not meet those lofty expectations, as they would finish second in both the conference regular season and tournament behind rival UCLA. Nonetheless, at 27-7 overall and 13-5 in conference play Arizona still had a successful season by most standards, as they qualified for their sixth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and earned a No. 4 seed in the West region.

In spite of their second-place finish in conference play, some felt that Arizona deserved a higher seed than fourth overall. The Wildcats had wins over four teams that earned No. 1 seeds (Duke, Illinois, Stanford, and Michigan State), but four of their seven losses came against teams that would not make the NCAA field (Oregon State twice, USC twice). Nonetheless, most agreed that it was one of the toughest draws in recent memory for any team not earning a top seed if Arizona were to make it out of their region alive, they would likely have to face ACC champion Duke in the Sweet Sixteen and then either Illinois or Stanford two teams that had been ranked No. 1 at some point during the season waiting for them in the Elite Eight should they make it that far..

The Wildcats began their tournament run with a 92-71 rout of 13th-seeded South Alabama In their second game against 12th-seeded Wake Forest , Arizona began sloppy but improved as Marky Nunnally ‘s put back gave them lead with 5:02 remaining Nunnally again gave them lead with :28 left but Josh Howard sank two Free throws with 12 seconds left to give Demon Deacons Christiansen put back with two seconds remaining gave Wildcat fans some anxious moments but time ultimately expired as Arizona won 71-69

Up next for Arizona was fifth-seeded Ohio State , who had upset fourth seed Kentucky handily 96-70 two nights prior In what many consider one of tournament’s best games ever , neither team led by more than six points throughout entire contest With game tied at 73 late , Luke Recker made jumper then was fouled by Gilbert Arenas on way down Recker made bonus free throw to give Buckeyes three point lead but Arenas responded with jumper from elbow over double team to tie score at 76 with 11 seconds remaining After incompletion by Scoonie Penn , Arenas had chance win game for Wildcats but his three pointer rimmed out as Ohio State won 78-75 . After game Arenas told reporters “I thought it was going down,” “But you know what? It didn’t.”

It appeared game may have slipped away from Wildcats when Reggie Geary fouled Recker on three point attempt with 50 seconds which sent him Recker made all three Free throws to give Buckeyes 66-63 lead Brandon Maggette had opportunity tie score or give Wildcats lead on subsequent possession but his running jumper rimmed out wouldn’t get closer than one possession rest way as Boban Savovic made couple key baskets en route victory

Despite not achieving ultimate goal winning National Championship , 2001 still rank among most successful seasons program history
