The 2001 NBA All-Star game was the 81st edition of the event. The game was played on February 14, 2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York City The East defeated the West 148–143.

The 2002 NBA All-Star Game was the first to be played in Houston, Texas. The game was originally scheduled for the Alamodome in San Antonio but due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, it was moved to Houston’s Compaq Center.

For the second straight year, the Eastern Conference All-Stars faced off against the Western Conference All-Stars. The East team was coached by Rick Carlisle of the Indiana Pacers while Nate McMillan of the Seattle SuperSonics led the West squad. Ray Allen from Milwaukee Bucks was named as a replacement for Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant due to injury.

In this game, Allen set an All-Star Game record with eight three-point field goals made as he scored 28 points en route to winning co-MVP honors with Shaquille O’Neal who had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the West team which won 111110. Allen’s eight 3-pointers broke Glen Rice’s record of six that was set five years earlier in 1996. This was also first time in ASG history that two players share MVP honors.

This was also Pat Riley’s first career win as an All-Star Head Coach after losing his previous seven games; He would go on to lose his next two games before finally winning again in 2010. The Three-Point Shootout has been a part of NBA All-Star Weekend since 1986. The first shootout was won by Craig Hodges of the Chicago Bulls who made 19 of 25 shots. Hodges went on to win the next two years as well, making him the only player in NBA history to win three consecutive Three-Point Shootouts.

Michael Jordan won the 1997 Three-Point Shootout, which was his only appearance in the event. Jordan’s victory came in his first year back with the Chicago Bulls after a brief retirement. In 1998, Jeff Hornacek of the Utah Jazz set a then-record by making 20 of 25 shots en route to victory.

The current record for most three-pointers made in one minute is held by Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors who made 27 shots in 2016. Thompson broke Hornacek’s record of 20 by hitting 21 straight shots at one point during his record performance.
