The Rockets used a balanced attack and relied on their Supporting cast to make up for injuries to Key Players mid-season en route to their first NBA title For Houston, Clyde Drexler led a balanced scoring attack that included Hakeem Olajuwon (who was awarded as that year’s regular season MVP), Robert Horry, Mario Elie and Kenny Smith during their run through the playoffs; Drexler and Olajuwon became only the third set of teammates in finals history to both score over 400 points (Drexler totaled 477 points and Olajuwon 448). Houston became only the sixth team in NBA history to win a playoff series after being down 31. The Sonics appeared to control much of Game 1 before losing due mainly to poor free throw shooting late in regulation; Orlando reclaimed homecourt advantage heading into Game 3 with a 110106 victory despite being outshot and outrebounded by Seattle. It was not until Game 5 when Seattle established an advantage by winning easily 115102 on their home court They then took control for good by winning Game 6 9691 behind 36 points from Kemp.

Gary Payton

Gary Dwayne Payton (born July 23, 1968) is an American former Professional Basketball player. He started his career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Seattle SuperSonics, and played for the Milwaukee Bucks Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat He also played professionally for BG Gttingen of the Basketball Bundesliga and for the Seattle SuperSonics of the NBAs developmental league. Known as The Glove for his defensive prowess, Payton was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team nine times and led Seattle to their only NBA championship in 1979. He was also a nine-time NBA All-Star and a nine-time All-NBA team member. Off the court, Payton pursued a rap career during his playing days.

After his retirement from playing basketball professionally in 2007, Payton became a basketball commentator on ESPN. His son Jazzy Payton has played basketball professionally in Europe.
