The Lakers Select… in the NBA draft The Pros
The Lakers have long been one of the most successful franchises in the NBA, and they always seem to find a way to reload their roster with young talent. In recent years they have used the draft to add players like Lonzo Ball Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram This year, they have the opportunity to add another young player to their core.
The Lakers currently hold the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft and there is a lot of speculation about who they will select. Some believe that they will take a point guard like Ja Morant or Darius Garland, while others believe that they will draft a wing player like R.J. Barrett or Cam Reddish
Whoever the Lakers select in the draft, there is no doubt that they will be adding a talented player to their roster. Here are some of the pros of selecting each of the top prospects
Ja Morant: Morant is an electric point guard who can score and distribute the ball equally well. He would be a great fit next to Lebron James and would give the Lakers another offensive weapon.
Darius Garland: Garland is an excellent shooter and has shown flashes of being a very good playmaker. He would add another dimension to the Lakers’ offense and could help space the floor for Lebron James and Anthony Davis
R.J. Barrett: Barrett is one of the best scorers in this year’s Draft Class and has shown that he can score from anywhere on the court. He would give the Lakers another option on offense and would be able to create his own shot when needed.
The Lakers Select… in the NBA Draft The Cons
1. The Lakers have yet to make a decision on who will coach the team next season, and this draft pick could have a significant impact on that decision.
2. The Lakers have been historically terrible at drafting in the later rounds of the NBA Draft and this pick could very likely be a bust.
3. The Lakers are already loaded with young talent and may not have the need for another young player who will need time to develop.
The Lakers Select… in the NBA Draft The Bottom Line
The Los Angeles Lakers have the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft This is their first Draft Pick since they selected D’Angelo Russell with the second overall pick in 2015. The Lakers are coming off a season in which they went 35-47 and missed the playoffs. They have not made the playoffs since 2013.
The Lakers will be hoping to find a player who can help them turn things around and get back to being a contender in the Western Conference There are a number of ways they could go with their pick. They could opt for a player who is ready to contribute right away, or they could go for a prospect who has high upside but may take a few years to develop.
Some of the names that have been linked to the Lakers include Marvin Bagley III Mohamed Bamba, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Wendell Carter Jr. All of these players would be good fits for the Lakers and could help them start to turn things around.
It will be interesting to see who the Lakers end up selecting with their seventh overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft
The Lakers Select… in the NBA Draft The Reactions
The 2019 NBA Draft is complete and, as always, there are winners and losers. It seems like the Lakers may have come out on top though as they selected Duke superstar Zion Williamson with the first overall pick. There were plenty of other options for the Lakers at #1, but they ultimately went with Zion and it’s hard to argue with that decision.
The rest of the draft had some surprises as well including the Knicks selecting RJ Barrett with the third overall pick. Some thought the Knicks would go with Ja Morant at #2, but they ultimately went with Barrett which was a bit of a surprise.
Regardless of what people think about individual picks, it’s hard to deny that this was a very strong draft class Time will tell how these prospects develop, but there’s no doubt that there are a lot of talented young players in this class.
