The Oklahoma City Thunder Record
The Oklahoma City Thunder are an American professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. The Thunder compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena
The Thunder were previously known as the Seattle SuperSonics an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1967–68 season. The SuperSonics relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008 after a settlement was reached between the ownership group led by Clay Bennett and lawmakers in Seattle. In Seattle, the SuperSonics won three NBA championships (1979, 1987, 1996) and played their home games at KeyArena from 1967 through 2008.
Oklahoma City has been home to two NBA franchises. The city’s first franchise was granted to Oklahoma City businessman Don Dikeman as a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the 1967–68 season, which began play as the Denver Rockets that year but changed its name to the New Orleans Buccaneers for 1968–69 after moving to Louisiana. A failed attempt to sell that team to out-of-town interests led to it being seized by then-league commissioner Jack Dolph, who awarded it to Bennett and his partners on January 12, 2006. That franchise became known as the Tulsa 66ers upon relocation before eventually being renamed the Thunder when it was determined that “SuperSonics” would remain with former owner Howard Schultz if he ever revived basketball in Seattle.
