The NCAA Tournament
March Madness is upon us, and that means it’s time to start thinking about the NCAA Tournament For the uninitiated, the NCAA tournament is a single-elimination Basketball Tournament held each spring in the United States featuring 68 college teams from around the country.
The tournament is typically divided into four regions, with each region consisting of 16 teams. The teams are seeded from 1 to 16 within each region, with the higher seeds typically receiving preferential treatment in the form of easier matchups and homecourt advantage
The first four rounds of the tournament are known as the “First Four,” and take place at four different sites around the country. The First Four consists of four play-in games, in which the winners advance to the main 64-team bracket.
The first round of the main bracket is held at eight different sites around the country, followed by the second round (often referred to as the “Sweet 16”), which is held at four sites. The regional semifinals (the “Elite Eight”) are then held at two sites, followed by the regional finals (the “Final Four”). The Final Four consists of two national semifinal games and one National Championship game, all of which are held at a single site.
This year’s NCAA Tournament will begin on March 17 with the First Four games, and will conclude on April 6 with the National Championship game.

In the first round of the NCAA Tournament Texas Rio Grande Valley faced off against Purdue, one of the top teams in the country. Although they lost that game, they made history by becoming the first team from the Western Athletic Conference to ever win a game in the NCAA tournament
The Road to the NCAA Tournament
In order to even be eligible to play in the NCAA tournament a school must first go through a rigorous selection process. There are a number of ways a school can earn their way into the tournament, but the most common are winning their conference tournament or earning an at-large bid.
Winning a conference tournament is the surest way into the NCAA Tournament Each conference is given a certain number of automatic bids, which go to the team that wins their conference tournament. There are a total of 32 conference tournaments, and each one is elimination style. This means that if a team wants to have a chance at playing in the NCAA tournament they need to win six straight games against some of the best teams in their own conference.
An at-large bid is given to teams that did not win their conference tournament, but still had an impressive enough season to warrant an invitation into the NCAA tournament Schools that are on the bubble for an at-large bid often spend Selection Sunday sweating it out until their name is called on national television. Being selected as an at-large team means that a school was one of the best 36 teams in the country that did not win their conference tournament.
Once a school has either won their conference tournament or been selected as an at-large team, they are officially in the NCAA Tournament The 68 teams that make up this year’s field will be announced on Selection Sunday, and then they will find out who their first round opponent will be. The first four days of the NCAA Tournament are commonly referred to as “March Madness ” and they feature some of the most exciting basketball games of the entire year.
