Greenbrier Christian Academy (GCA) is located in Chesapeake, Virginia and is a Private, Christian school that offers education from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Since its founding in 1986, the school has been known for its strong academics and athletics programs. Greenbrier Christian Academy Baseball is no different, boasting a rich tradition of success on the diamond.

The GCA baseball program has been around since the school’s inception in 1986. In the early years, the team was coached by Bob Williams, who led the team to its first successes. Williams was followed by Jeff Slater, who coached the team from 1989-1991. During his tenure, Slater led GCA to its first ever conference championship in 1990.

In 1992, Mark Curry took over as Head Coach and led the team to new heights. Under Curry’s leadership, GCA won nine conference championships and made nine appearances in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) State Tournament Curry retired after the 2000 season with a record of 209-54-1.

Following Curry’s retirement, GCA brought in longtime Major League pitcher Curt Schilling to take over as head coach Schilling coached the team for one season before leaving to pursue other interests. He was replaced by Chris Finwood, who coached the team from 2002-2004. During his time at GCA, Finwood led the team to two conference championships and two State Tournament appearances.

In 2005, former Major League player Brian Daubach took over as Head Coach and led GCA to new levels of success. In his four years at the helm, Daubach guided GCA to four conference championships and four state tournament appearances. The highlight of his tenure came in 2008 when GCA won the VISAA state championship – the first ever for the school. Daubach left after the 2008 season to take a coaching position with a minor League Baseball team.

Since 2009, Darrell Handelsman has been at the helm of GCA Baseball Program During his time as Head coach Handelsman has led GCA to six conference championships and four state tournament appearances – including a state runner-up finish in 2014. Under his guidance, GCA has continued its tradition of excellence on the diamond – cementing its place as one of Virginia’s top baseball programs
