Jarod Wright was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2006 MLB Draft He is a 6’4″, 225-pound right-handed pitcher. He attended the University of Maryland where he played college baseball for the Terrapins.
Wright made his professional debut in 2006 with the Aberdeen IronBirds, and spent the whole season there, posting a record of 6-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 14 starts. In 2007, he was promoted to the Frederick Keys, where he went 11-10 with a 4.59 ERA in 28 starts.
The following year, 2008, he earned a promotion to the Bowie Baysox, and was named the team’s pitcher of the year, going 9-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 25 starts. He also led the team in strikeouts with 133.

What are his strengths and weaknesses?
Jarod Wright is a highly touted pitching prospect in the San Diego Padres organization. The 24-year-old right-hander was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of South Carolina He has spent the last two seasons pitching at the Double-A level and is currently on the 40-man roster.
Wright’s calling card is his plus control. He has consistently posted excellent walk rates throughout his minor league career, including a 1.8 BB/9 rate in 2019. Wright also possesses a deep repertoire of pitches, featuring a low-90s fastball, a cutter, a changeup, and a curveball. His best pitch is his cutter, which he uses to get swings and misses as well as weak contact.
While Wright does have some intriguing strengths, there are also some significant weaknesses in his game. Firstly, he doesn’t miss many bats; his career Minor League strikeout rate is just 6.8 K/9. In addition, while he has good control of his pitches, he doesn’t always command them well, resulting in too many hits and home runs allowed (1.4 HR/9 in 2019). If Wright can’t make some adjustments at the Triple-A level, it’s doubtful he’ll be able to find sustained success in the majors.
What does he need to work on?
Jarod Wright is a highly touted prospects in the minor leagues. He has great potential, but there are a few things he needs to work on before he can be considered a Major League player.
One thing Wright needs to work on is his hitting. In the minors, he’s been a good hitter, but his average isn’t where it needs to be. His strikeout rate is also a bit high. If he can improve his hitting, he’ll be one step closer to the majors.
Another thing Wright needs to work on is his fielding. He’s made some errors in the minors and his defense needs to improve if he wants to play at the highest level.
If Jarod Wright can improve his hitting and defense, he has a good chance of making it to the majors.
