2019 Roster

The 2019 MIT baseball team is composed of 34 student-athletes, representing 18 states (and one Canadian province). The roster includes 27 returnees and seven newcomers.

New Additions

The 2019 MIT Baseball Team will have a few new faces on the roster. Here are some of the newcomers that you’ll need to get to know:

Infielders:
-Sean Rogers: A freshman from San Diego CA, Sean was a four-year varsity starter in High School and was named team captain his senior year. He is a versatile player who has experience at multiple positions, but is expected to see most of his time at third base for the Engineers.

-Max Cusimano: A sophomore transfer from Chandler-Gilbert Community College Max is a native of Andover, MA. He was named a junior college All-American last season after hitting .427 with 11 home runs and 57 RBI. He is expected to be one of the team’s primary infielders this season.

Outfielders:
-Jake Martin: A freshman from New Canaan, CT, Jake was a two-sport athlete in high school also Playing Football He was named first team all-conference in both baseball and football his senior year. He is expected to see time in both left and right field for the Engineers this season.

Pitchers:
-Andrew Lin: A sophomore transfer from Mount San Antonio College, Andrew is a native of Fremont, CA. He was named first team all-conference last season after going 8-3 with a 3.21 ERA. He will be part of the rotation this season and is expected to be one of the team’s top pitchers.

Team Captains

The 2019 MIT varsity baseball team is composed of 33 talented student-athletes from all over the country, led by a core group of six seniors who have been named team captains. These young men have been leaders on and off the field throughout their time at MIT, and they are ready to take on the challenge of leading the Engineers to a successful 2019 campaign.

The captains for the 2019 season are:

– outfielders Michael Yerina and Garrett Greenwood;
– infielders Max Stafford-Smith and Tommy Newton;
– catcher Griffin Stoller; and
– pitcher David Hesslink.

Key Returners

The 2019 MIT baseball team will look to rebound from a disappointing 2018 campaign in which the Engineers finished last in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a 6-18 conference record and 11-23 overall. Head Coach Walter Souza enters his ninth season at the helm of the program and will look to a core of key returners to help the team take a step forward this spring.

Leading the way for the Engineers will be two of their top hitters from last season, senior second baseman MurphyLondon Gardner (Scituate, Mass.) and junior outfielder Jack Morrow ( Cambridge, Mass.). Gardner was named a NEWMAC Second Team All-Conference selection last year after hitting .333 with 19 RBIs, while Morrow was solid in his first season with the team, batting .286 with eight stolen bases

On the mound, junior right-hander Nick Chigas (North Attleboro, Mass.) returns as the team’s ace after posting a 4-5 record with a 3.62 ERA in 2018. Chigas will be joined in the starting rotation by senior righty Alex Cunningham (Needham, Mass.), who went 3-4 with a 4.24 ERA last season, and junior southpaw Dylan Tray

Pitching Staff

The 2019 pitching staff is a mix of experienced hurlers and exciting newcomers. Led by ace Ethan DeCaster, the staff will look to build off a strong 2018 campaign.

The staff is anchored by DeCaster, who was an All-American and led the team in strikeouts last season. He will be joined by junior Drew Avery, who also earned All-American honors last year. Sophomores BillyFML Rubin and Timmy Smith round out the rotation.

The bullpen will be headlined by junior closer Dylan Hayes, who set a school record with 13 saves last season. He will be supported by a group of talented relievers, including sophomores Jake Dziomba andWill Flynn, who both saw significant time on the mound last year.

Infield

The 2019 MIT baseball team will look to build on the success of last year’s campaign that saw the Engineers finish with a 20-17 record. This year’s team will be led by a strong group of seniors that includes infielder Kyri Palmer-Fisher (Fort Lauderdale Fla.), who was named a All-New England Baseball second team selection last season.

The heart of the team will be their infield play as they return all but one starter from last year. At first base will be junior Blaze order (Denton, Texas), who was named an All-New Land Baseball honorable mention last season. He will be joined by second baseman Kyri Palmer-Fisher and third baseman Alec Kushner (Merrick, N.Y.), who was also an All-New England Baseball honorable mention selection last year. Shortstop Will callahan ( wellesley, Mass.) rounds out the group.

The outfield for the 2019 season looks to be very strong, with a mix of veterans and young players The group is led by senior captain Matt Johnston, who is entering his fourth season as a starter. He will be joined by junior Alex Lakatos and sophomores Luke Bonfield and Mike Martin.

The outfield will also feature a number of new faces, including freshmen Tim Cate and Jack Burton. Cate is a highly-touted prospect who was drafted in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals Burton is a local product from nearby Lexington, Massachusetts.

This group will be tasked with replacing the production of 2018 seniors Jared Pipkin and Robbie Hammett. Both were key contributors to the team’s offense last season, and their leadership will be missed in the clubhouse.

2018 Results

The 2019 Mit baseball roster is highlighted by returning All-Americans in outfielder Ike Kielty ’21 and pitcher Michael Yaffe ’20. The Engineers also return their top three starting pitchers from a year ago in Yaffe, Max Damer ’21, and Grayson Handel ’22. The team will look to build on their 2018 success which saw them reaching the NCAA regional Championship game for the first time since 2005.
