Boston University Hockey Roster: Who’s Who?

Boston University’s Hockey Team is one of the best in the country, and they have the roster to prove it. Here’s a look at some of the Key Players on the team.

Forwards

forwards Jake Weidner and Morgan Richard lead the way up front for the Terriers. Weidner, a senior from Duluth, Minnesota, is BU’s active career leader in goals (42) and points (92). He also ranks second in game-winning goals (9) and third in power-play markers (16). Richard, a junior from St. Georges, Quebec, ranks second on the team in scoring behind Weidner with 41 points (18g, 23a).

Defensemen

Boston University has a long and storied history in college hockey winning five National Championships in the last thirty years. The 2017-2018 team is no exception, with a roster full of talented young players Here’s a look at some of the key defensemen on the team.

Freshman Charlie McAvoy is one of the most highly touted prospects in college hockey A first Round Draft pick of the Boston Bruins he’s already made an impact on the BU blueline, playing big minutes against some of the best forwards in the country.

Junior John MacLeod is another important player on the Boston University blueline. A steady defensive defenseman, he’s also capable of pitching in offensively when called upon.

Goaltenders

In any given season, a team will have three goalies on the roster. Two will dress for each game, with one acting as the backup if the starter lets in too many goals or gets injured. The third goalie is often left off the game-day roster altogether, only called up in case of an emergency.

This season, BU has three netminders to choose from. junior Max Prawdzik, sophomore Drew Commesso, and freshman Luke Kania.

Max Prawdzik is the incumbent starter, having played in 25 games last season. He posted a .926 save percentage and a 2.11 goals against average en route to a 16-7-2 record. He was named to the Hockey East All-Star team and was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the best goalie in NCAA Division I hockey.

Drew Commesso was BU’s starting goalie as a freshman last season before ceding the crease to Prawdzik midway through the year. In 13 games (12 starts), he had a .915 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average.

Luke Kania is a freshman from Plymouth, Michigan. He spent last season playing for USA Hockey’s national team Development Program U-18 team, where he had a .916 save percentage and a 2.36 goals against average in 35 games.

Coaching Staff

Pat Foley – Head Coach

Pat Foley enters his 20th season at the helm of the BU men’s Hockey Team in 2019-20. He has amassed 461 victories during his time with the Terriers, which is good for second all-time in program history, while his .651 winning percentage ranks first. A four-time Hockey East Coach of the Year, Foley has led BU to 18 appearances in the NCAA tournament five Hockey East regular season titles and four Hockey East Tournament championships. Under his guidance, the Terriers have reached the NCAA Frozen Four 10 times, winning titles in 1971, 1972, 2009 and 2011.

In the System

As the Boston University Hockey team gears up for another season, there are a few new names on the roster that fans may not be familiar with. Here’s a quick guide to some of the new faces that will be donning the BU jersey this season.

Forwards
--Jake Wise A third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, Wise is a skilled forward who has good size and vision. He’s expected to be a key player for BU this season.
-Drew melanson: A transfer from RPI, Melanson is a hard-working forward who can play both center and wing. He’s not the biggest player on the ice, but he’s got a good nose for the net.
– Brady Tkachuk: The brother of Ottawa Senators star defenseman Erik Tkachuk, Brady is a highly touted prospect who was taken fourth overall by the Senators in the 2018 NHL Draft He’s expected to be one of BU’s top forwards this season.

Defensemen
– David Farrance: A second-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2017, Farrance is an offensive defenseman with good skating and puck-moving ability. He could be a key player for BU on the Power play this season.
– Connor Lammert: A transfer from Minnesota Duluth Lammert is a big (6’4″, 220 lbs), physical defenseman who isn’t afraid to mix it up. He’ll add some much-needed size and toughness to BU’s blue line this season.

Goalies
– Jake Oettinger: A first-round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2017, Oettinger is considered one of the top goalie prospects in hockey. He’s expected to be BU’s starter this season and could be one of the best goalies in college hockey
– Max Prentice: A local product from Lexington, Massachusetts, Prentice will serve as BU’s backup goalie this season. He’s a tall (6’5″) goalie who uses his size well and has quick reflexes.

2017-18 Season Preview

The 2017-18 Boston University hockey team will feature a mix of experienced veterans and talented rookies. The team will be looking to build on last season’s success, when they made it to the Hockey East semifinals.

This season, the Terriers will be led by captains Matt Grzelcyk and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson. Grzelcyk, a senior defenseman, is a two-time All-American and was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Year last season. Forsbacka Karlsson, a junior forward, is BU’s leading returning scorer after tallying 15 goals and 19 assists last season.

Other key players for the Terriers include junior defenseman John MacLeod, who was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team last season; sophomore forward Dante Fabbro, who was recently named to the Preseason All-Hockey East Team; and freshman forward Brady Tkachuk, who was selected by the Ottawa Senators with the fourth overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft

2017-18 Season Recap

The 2017-18 Boston University men’s Ice Hockey team represented Boston University in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey season The team was coached by Albie O’Connell, in his first season as Head Coach of the Terriers. BU played their home games at the Agganis Arena, and competed in Hockey East

The Terriers entered the season coming off a 25-win campaign, and looked to improve upon their performance in the NCAA Tournament where they had fallen to Denver in the first round.

18-19 season Preview

As theclock ticks down to the start of the 2018-19 college hockey season, we are taking a look at each team in Hockey East We continue our previews today with a look at the Boston University Terriers

This will be Albie O’Connell’s first season as head coach of the Terriers after taking over for David Quinn, who left to take over as Head Coach of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres O’Connell inherits a BU team that is coming off a disappointing 2017-18 campaign in which they finished ninth in Hockey East with a 7-12-5 conference record and failed to make the conference tournament

The Terriers will look to rebound this season behind a strong group of forwards, led by seniors Jordan Greenway (3 goals, 11 assists) and Bobo Carpenter (16 goals, 7 assists). junior Dante Fabbro (7 goals, 19 assists) and sophomore Shane Bowers (11 goals, 9 assists).

On defense, senior John MacLeod (2 goals, 8 assists) and junior Chad Krys (3 goals, 15 assists) will be the leaders on a unit that also features sophomores Kasper Kotkansalo (1 goal, 5 assists) and David Farrance (3 goals, 11 assists).

In goal, junior Jake Oettinger returns after an up-and-down sophomore season in which he posted a 2.45 GAA and .920 save percentage. He will be backed up by freshman Connor LaCouvee.

2018-19 Season Recap

2018-19 was a banner year for the Terriers, as they posted a program-best record of 29-9-4 en route to their fifth Hockey East title and first since 2015. They also reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009, eventually falling to eventual National Champion Minnesota Duluth in the Northeast Regional Final.

Head coach Albie O’Connell led the way for BU, as he was named Hockey East Coach of the Year and a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given to college hockey’s top Head coach

The Terriers were led by a trio of senior forwards: captain and Hobey Baker Award finalist Patrick Harper, leading scorer and Hockey East First Team All-Star Bobo Carpenter, and 2019 NHL Draft pick Shane Bowers. Harper led the team in points (50) and goals (23), while Carpenter paced BU in assists (32) and finished second in points (45). Bowers recorded 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) in his final season.

On defense, sophomore David Farrance was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American after putting up 37 points (nine goals, 28 assists), while junior captain Brandon Hickey was named to the Hockey East Second Team All-Star squad. In goal, junior Jake Oettinger was named aFirst Team All-American after posting a 2.45 GAA and .927 save percentage.

2019-20 Season Preview

The 2019-20 Boston University men’s hockey team will feature a mix of experience and youth as the Terriers look to build on last season’s success.

Headlining the group is senior captain and Hobey Baker Award candidate David Farrance. The blueliner is coming off a junior campaign that saw him register career highs in goals (10), assists (22), and points (32) while being named a First Team All-American and a finalist for the Tim Taylor Award, given to the nation’s top defenseman.

Joining Farrance on the backend is junior Kasper Kotkansalo, who had a solid sophomore season, tallying six goals and 11 assists while also seeing time on the PK. Sophomore Drew Melanson and freshman Luke Tuch will also look to make an impact on the blue line after impressive showings in their first collegiate seasons.

Up front, BU will be led by junior Pat Harper, who was second on the team in scoring last year with 27 points (11g, 16a). Harper will be joined by fellow juniors Joel Farabee and Logan Cockerill as well as sophomores Shane Bowers and Ty Amonte as the Terriers look to replace the offensive firepower lost with the graduation of Dante Fabbro and Brady Tkachuk.

Rounding out BU’s forward group are freshmen Matthew Boldy Robert Mastrosimone, Trevor Zegras, Ethan Phillips, Jack DeBoer, and Luke Stevens. The six first-year forwards have a combined 13 years of USHL experience and figure to make an immediate impact for the Terriers.

In goal, BU returns sophomore Sam Tucker after he posted a 9-4-1 record as a freshman. Tucker will be backed up by freshman Drew Commesso, who was named USA Hockey’s Goaltender of the Year after winning gold at both the U18 World Junior Championship and Five Nations Tournament last season.
