Bemidji State Hockey: A Tradition of Excellence

Since its inception in 1947, the Bemidji State Hockey Program has been a model of excellence. The Beavers have won 21 conference championships made 11 NCAA tournament appearances and reached the Frozen Four three times. In 1999, Bemidji State captured the NCAA Division I National Championship cementing its place among the elite programs in college hockey The Beavers are also one of only two programs to have won both an NCAA Division I National Championship and an NCAA Division III National Championship

Bemidji State’s rich tradition of success is built on a foundation of hard work dedication and commitment to excellence. The Beavers are proud to have produced many Great players and coaches over the years, including Hobey Baker Award winners John Scott and Adam Fox as well as NHL All-Stars Craig Hartsburg and Bruce Boudreau.

Today, the Bemidji State Hockey program is committed to continuing its tradition of excellence. With a new state-of-the-art arena and a passionate fan base, the Beavers are poised to write another chapter in their storied history.

The Bemidji State Hockey Program

The Bemidji State hockey program has a long tradition of excellence, dating back to its first season in 1947. The program has won four National Championships and has produced numerous All-Americans and professional Hockey Players Bemidji State is a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), one of the premier Division I hockey conferences in the country. The Beavers have made 15 appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament most recently in 2019.

The History of Bemidji State Hockey

Under head coachBernie Anderson, the Beavers compiled a promiseing 25-22-1 record in their first season of varsity hockey in 1962. But it would be the 1967-68 campaign under first year Head Coach Bill Selman that would change everything. That season, the Beavers rattled off an incredible 32-0-2 record to finish the regular season undefeated, a feat that has yet to be duplicated in NCAA Hockey history.

The Bemidji State Hockey Tradition

Bemidji State University’s Hockey program has a long and storied tradition of excellence. The Beavers have won nine national championships, including seven at the Division I level, and have produced numerous NHL players Olympians, and All-Americans.

BSU’s Hockey Program began in 1947, when the school fielded its first team. The Beavers quickly rose to prominence, winning their first National Championship in 1954. BSU won three more titles in the 1960s, before claiming back-to-back crowns in 1974 and 1975.

The Beavers made the jump to Division I in 1987 and won their first National Championship at that level in 2003. BSU has also won championships in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2012.

In addition to its on-ice success, Bemidji State has also produced a number of NHL Players including Hall of Famer Phil Housley.Current NHLers include Zach Parise, Matt Read, Andrew Murray, and Defenceman Brady Wacker .

From dressing up in costume for “Hockey Day Minnesota” to participating in the world’s largest Pond hockey tournament, there is always something going on with Bemidji State Hockey

Under head coach Tom Serratore, the Beavers have been one of the most consistent teams in the country, posting a winning record in 12 of his 13 seasons at the helm. The Beavers have also had a number of individual success stories during Serratore’s tenure. Seven Bemidji State players have gone on to play in the NHL, and many more have enjoyed successful careers in professional hockey

The Bemidji State Hockey Coaches

Since the program began in 1948, the Bemidji State hockey team has been coached by some of the most outstanding coaches in the sport. Here are just a few of the many coaches who have made Bemidji State Hockey the tradition of excellence it is today.

John Glasfeldt (1948-1949)
The first coach in program history, Glasfeldt led the team to a 12-4-1 record in its inaugural season.

Wally Gilbertson (1949-1977)
Gilbertson is the winningest coach in Bemidji State Hockey history, compiling a 386-273-21 record over his 28 seasons at the helm. He led the Beavers to four NAIA tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 1970.

Bernie Burke (1977-1982)
Burke guided the Beavers to their first NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 1981, where they defeated Bowling Green before falling to eventual National Champion Wisconsin. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 1982.

Frank Anzalone (1982-1987)
Under Anzalone, the Beavers made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 1986 and 1987, becoming just the second team in WCHA history to do so. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 1987.

Troy Jutting (1987-1995)
Jutting led Bemidji State to its first and only WCHA regular season championship in 1994 and was named WCHA Coach of the Year that same season. He guided the Beavers to four NCAA tournament appearances during his nine seasons at BSU.
