The Cinderella stories
Conference USA has been a dominant force in women’s basketball the past few years. While the conference may not have the household name programs of the SEC or ACC, it has been a breeding ground for Cinderella stories.
In 2013, 14th seeded Ole Miss knocked off powerhouses like Louisville and Ohio State to make it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen In 2015, it was 11th seed James Madison who made a run to the Elite Eight. Last year, it was 12th seeded Florida Gulf Coast who made a splash in the tournament, upsetting 5th seed Florida State in the first round.
While there is no clear-cut favorite this year, there are a few teams that could make some noise in the NCAA tournament Middle Tennessee State is led by electric guard Ty Petty and forward Cierra Johnson. The Blue Raiders will be looking to build on their success from last year, when they won 27 games and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament
UTEP is another team to keep an eye on. The Miners are led by senior guard Jenzel Nash, who is averaging 17 points per game They have also had success in recent years making it to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015.
Conference USA may not have the household name programs, but they have proven that they can compete with anyone in women’s college basketball With a few talented teams this year, don’t be surprised if another Cinderella story comes out of this conference come March Madness time.
The bracket predictions
As the regular season comes to a close, the conference championships are set to begin. The biggest question on everyone’s mind is which team will come out of each conference and represent their respective seed in the NCAA tournament? For some conferences, this is an easy answer. However, in the case of Conference USA, there are a number of teams that could potentially make a run at the title.
The current favorite to win the conference is Old Dominion, who is led by 6’1” senior guard Destinee Young. The Lady Monarchs have been dominant all season, going undefeated in conference play and winning their games by an average of 19 points. They have also shown the ability to beat quality opponents, with non-conference wins over Power 5 schools such as LSU and Pitt. While they are clearly the team to beat, there are a number of other teams that could give them a run for their money.
Middle Tennessee has emerged as one of the top contenders in recent weeks, thanks in large part to the play of 5’8” junior guard Anastasia Hayes. Hayes is averaging 21 points per game on 46% shooting from three-point range and she will be a tough matchup for any team in the conference tournament The Blue Raiders also have a strong inside presence with 6’2” senior forward Jess James, who is averaging a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds per game. If they can get past Old Dominion in the conference tournament they will be a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament
Another team that could make some noise in the Conference Tournament is Charlotte. The 49ers are led by 5’9” senior guard Jonquel Jones, who is averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds per game. Charlotte has wins over quality opponents such as USC and Florida State and they will be looking to make a run at the conference title
When it comes to March Madness anything can happen. But if we had to make a prediction right now, our money would be on Old Dominion to win the Conference USA Tournament and represent the conference as a high seed in the NCAA tournament
The championship game
In recent years the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship game has been one of the most highly anticipated and competitive in all of College Basketball The game has featured some of the nation’s Top Players and teams, and the level of play has been consistently high.
This year’s Championship game will be no different, as two of the conference’s top teams the University of Central Florida Knights and the Old Dominion University Lady Monarchs, are set to face off. Both teams have had stellar seasons and are loaded with talent.
The Championship game will be played on March 11th at 2:00pm EST at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. It will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
The aftermath
Conference USA is widely considered the weakest of the Power 5 conferences, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good teams and players worth watching. After all, two of the last three National Champions (Connecticut and Baylor) came from so-called “mid-major” conferences. Here’s a look at some of the top players and teams in C-USA this season.
