Early History

The Colts were a Baseball Team based in Baltimore, Maryland that played in the National League from 1882 to 1899. The team was also known as the Baltimore Orioless from 1882 to 1883 and the Baltimore Orioles from 1883 to 1899. The Colts began play in 1882 as the Toledo Blue Stockings, an independent minor league team The following year, they joined the National League as the New York Gothams.

In 1886, they changed their name to the Brooklyn Dodgers (not to be confused with the current Los Angeles Dodgers franchise). The team moved to Baltimore in 1890 and changed their name to the Orioles. In those early days, there was no formal schedule of game dates; teams simply played whomever they could find and whenever they could find them.

The first game in franchise history was played on May 2, 1882, against the Cincinnati Reds at Meadowbrook Park in Cincinnati; Cincinnati won, 6-3. The first Home game was two days later, also against Cincinnati; Brooklyn won that game, 7-6.

However, after another period of poor play in the mid-1990s, Bob Irsay decided to move the team to Indianapolis. The Colts played their first game in Indianapolis in 1984.
