Introduction
The DeSales University baseball team is a NCAA Division III college baseball team that competes in the Landmark Conference The team is currently coached by Scott Bellefeuille, who is entering his eighth season at the helm of the program. The Desales baseball roster for the 2020 season includes 33 student-athletes, including 28 players who are returners from last year’s squad.
The Coaching Staff
The current Desales Coaching Staff consists of Head Coach Mike Desa, pitching coach Steve Mrowka, hitting coach Joe Carbone, and defensive coach Anthony Diaz. The coaching staff has a wealth of knowledge and experience between them. Coach Desa is entering his ninth season as the head baseball coach at DeSales University During his tenure, the team has won six conference championships and made five trips to the NCAA tournament Coach Mrowka is entering his sixth season as the pitching coach at DeSales. In that time, he has helped produce 37 all-conference pitchers and two conference Pitchers of the Year. Hitting coach Joe Carbone is entering his fourth season with the team. During his time at DeSales, the team’s batting average has increased every year. Defensive coach Anthony Diaz is in his first season with the team but has coached at various levels for over 20 years.
The Players
The DeSales baseball roster is filled with talented student-athletes who are committed to excelling on the diamond. The team is comprised of infielders, outfielders, pitchers, and catchers who all bring a unique skill set to the table. DeSales is fortunate to have such a deep and talented pool of players to choose from.
Infielders
The DeSales infield is anchored by first baseman/catcher senior Matt Szczur. Szczur is a two-time All-Catholic League selection and was named honorable mention All-State as a junior. He batted .333 with four home runs and 22 RBI last season. Senior second baseman/pitcher Mark Budzinski is also a two-time All-Catholic League pick and hit .321 with 24 RBI in 2017.Other key contributors in the infield include junior third baseman Alecosion southard (.269, 9 RBI), sophomore shortstop Luke Michalski (.235, 11 RBI), and senior utility player Joey Monahan (.200, 7 RBI).
Outfielders
The DeSales outfield features a mix of experience and youth. Senior Left fielder Andrew Smollen is a three-year starter who hit .275 with 18 RBI last season. Junior center fielder Nate Novak will also be counted on to provide some pop in the lineup after hitting four home runs and driving in 17 runs as a sophomore. Rounding out the starting outfield will be either sophomore Ryan Qualkenbush or junior Kyle Butler. Qualkenbush hit .182 in limited action last year while Butler batted .250 in spot duty.
Pitchers
TheDeSales pitching staff is once again loaded with talent. Senior right-hander Alex Met (4-4, 2 SV, 1.96 ERA) returns as the ace of the staff after being named honorable mention All-State last season. Other key returnees include senior lefty Sam Heilman (3-2, 4 SV, 3 ERA), junior righty Max Scherzer (3-3, 5 ERA), and senior righty Mike Shaffer (2-0, 1 SV).

Pitcher Adam Bauer is a senior from Los Angeles California. He’s been with the team for four years and is one of its most experienced players. Bauer is a conditioner, meaning he spends a lot of time working out to stay in shape for the season. He’s also a left-handed thrower, which makes him valuable on the mound.
Infielder Luke Becker is a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio. He transferred to Desales this year after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Cincinnati State. Becker is known for his strong throwing arm and his ability to hit for power. He’ll be patrolling third base this season.

The Desales Baseball Team has been to the NCAA Division III World Series seven times and have won three National Championships The team has appeared in the World Series in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. The team’s best finish came in 1981 when they finished as the national runner-up.
