Neither team scored again until Fisher hit a go-ahead jump shot with 4:03 left in overtime to give Los Angeles a 99–97 lead

In Game 3, Paul Pierce scored 41 points for Boston while Bryant struggled, managing only 18 points on 6-for-24 shooting from the field; however, Kobe would redeem himself in Game 4 with a monster performance of 40 points on 16-for-29 shooting, leading his team to another win and evening up the series at 2 games apiece.

The defining moment of this series came in Game 5 when Pierce fouled out with just under five minutes remaining in regulation and his team down by three points; however, Boston’s role players stepped up in his absence and led their team to victory in overtime. With Pierce out for most of the overtime period due to foul trouble, it was up to Allen and Garnett to carry the load for Boston offensively; they combined for 12 of Boston’s 15 points in OT including two clutch Free throws from Allen with 9 seconds remaining that effectively sealed the game for Boston.

In Game 6 back in Los Angeles Garnett had a monster game with 26 points and 16 rebounds while Pierce added 21 points as the Celtics routed the Lakers 131–92 to close out the series 4 games to 2 and win their seventeenth NBA Championship
