The Future of Grand Slam Baseball in Alabama
As Professional Baseball continues to grow in popularity, states across the country are vying for a chance to bring a team to their city. Alabama is no different, with multiple groups working to bring a MLB, MiLB, or independent League team to the state. However, the path to bringing Professional Baseball to Alabama is not without its challenges.
One of the biggest obstacles facing groups trying to bring professional baseball to Alabama is the state’s lack of a suitable stadium. To meet MLB requirements, a stadium must have at least 10,000 seats and be located in an urban area with a population of at least 2 million people Additionally, the stadium must be located within 45 minutes of an international airport. None of the existing stadiums in Alabama meet these criteria, making it necessary to build a new facility from scratch.
Another challenge facing groups trying to bring professional baseball to Alabama is the state’s lack of experience in hosting professional teams. The last time Alabama had a professional baseball team was in 1912, when the Birmingham Barons were founded. The Barons played for less than two seasons before folding due to financial difficulties. As a result, there is no existing infrastructure in place for supporting a professional baseball team in Alabama.
Despite these challenges, there remains optimism that professional baseball could come to Alabama in the future. In 2017, construction began on Ballpark at Hickory Point, a $46 million Minor League ballpark located in Huntsville. The ballpark is set to open in 2020 and will be home to the Rocket City trash pandas an AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels Additionally, two other groups – Birmingham Baseball Ventures and Southeast Professional Baseball – are working to bring either an MLB or MiLB team
