In our final installment of The Heartland Baseball Roster The Best of the Midwest, we take a look at the pitchers. These are the men who, day in and day out, take the mound and give it their all. They are the backbone of any team and their contributions cannot be underestimated. From hard- throwing flamethrowers to crafty veterans, these are the best of the best. So without further ado, here is The Heartland Baseball Roster The Best of the Midwest – Part 3.

Sandy Koufax, P (Los Angeles Dodgers) – Koufax is one of the most decorated pitchers in Major League Baseball history and is considered by many to be the greatest left-handed pitcher of all time. He was a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and a seven-time All-Star. He is also a member of the World Series winning 1965 Dodgers team.

Koufax had a career ERA+ of 131, which is 31% better than league average. He also had an incredible 2.76 ERA over his 12-year career. In addition to his pitching prowess, Koufax was also an excellent hitter, posting a career batting average of .279 with 11 home runs and 94 RBIs.

Bob Gibson, P (St. Louis Cardinals) – Gibson is another legendary pitcher who blossomed in the 1960s. He was a nine-time All-Star and a two-time World Series champion with the Cardinals. He was also named the National League MVP in 1968 after posting an otherworldly 1.12 ERA – which remains the lowest single-season ERA since earned runs became an official stat in 1913.

Gibson had a career ERA+ of 128, which is 28% better than league average. He also struck out an astounding 3,117 batters over his 17-year career – good for seventh most all time. In addition to his pitching prowess, Gibson was also an excellent hitter, posting a career batting average of .304 with 24 home runs and 94 RBIs.

Steve Carlton, P (St. Louis Cardinals/Philadelphia Phillies) – Carlton is a four-time Cy Young Award winner and a ten-time All-Star who pitched for both the Cardinals and Phillies during his illustrious 24-year career. He is also a member of the Phillies’ 1980 World Series winning team

Carlton had a career ERA+ of 118, which is 18% better than league average over his 24 years in Major League Baseball He also struck out 4,136 batters over his lengthy career – good for fourth most all time behind only Nolan Ryan Randy Johnson and strikeout king Roger Clemens

The Heartland Baseball Roster The Best of the Midwest has been announced, and here are the pitchers who made the cut.

Luis Tiant, Cleveland Indians – Tiant was one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation, and he was part of Cleveland’s legendary pitching staff in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He finished his career with a 229-172 record, a 3.30 ERA, and 2,416 strikeouts.

Jim Perry, Minnesota Twins – Perry won the AL Cy Young Award in 1970 after posting a 24-12 record with a 3.04 ERA and 18 complete games. He was a key member of the Twins’ rotated that won two World Series titles in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Vida Blue, Oakland Athletics – Blue was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball during his prime with the Oakland Athletics He won the AL Cy Young Award and MVP in 1971 after going 24-8 with a 1.82 ERA. He also struck out 301 batters that season, which is still an Oakland A’s single-season record.

Gaylord Perry, San Francisco Giants – Perry is one of only two pitchers in baseball history to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues (the other is Roger Clemens). He won it in 1972 with the Giants after going 24-16 with a 2.50 ERA and 19 complete games. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.

Juan Marichal, San Francisco Giants – Marichal is considered one of the greatest pitchers ever to come out of Latin America. He had a 243-142 career record with a 2.89 ERA and 3,507 strikeouts. His signature pitch was a high leg kick that often caught hitters off-guard.

Bob Gibson, St Louis Cardinals – Gibson is considered by many to be one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history He won two World Series titles with the Cardinals and also had one of the most dominating seasons by a pitcher ever in 1968 when he posted a 1.12 ERA en route to winning MVP and Cy Young honors.

We’re in the home stretch now, and this time we move from the Central Division to the East. This was a difficult division to build a roster for due to the number of teams and the competitive nature of the division. In the end, we found a way to put together a solid lineup with a good mix of Offense and defense

1B – Anthony Rizzo Chicago Cubs
Rizzo has established himself as one of the best first baseman in baseball, and he’s still in his prime at age 28. He’s a three-time All-Star and he won a Gold Glove Award in 2016. Rizzo is a career .283/.385/.519 hitter with 166 home runs and 593 RBIs.

2B – Brian Dozier, Minnesota Twins
Dozier is another player in his prime at age 30. He’s coming off a 42-homer season in 2016 and he’s a two-time All-Star. Dozier is a career .248/.335/.443 hitter with 103 Home Runs and 380 RBIs.

SS – Francisco Lindor, Cleveland Indians
Lindor is only 23 years old, but he’s already one of the best shortstops in baseball. He was an All-Star in 2016 and he won a Gold Glove Award Lindor is a career .305/.358/.439 hitter with 25 home runs and 145 RBIs.

3B – Kris Bryant Chicago Cubs
Bryant is another young player who is already among the best at his position. The 25-year-old was an All-Star in 2016 and he won MVP honors after hitting .292/.385/.554 with 39 homers and 102 RBIs. Bryant is a career .284/.386/.537 hitter with 74 home runs and 222 RBIs.

OF – Jason Heyward Chicago Cubs
Heyward struggled at the plate in 2016 after signing a big free agent contract with the Cubs, but he’s still one of the best fielders in baseball The 27-year-old is a three-time Gold Glove Award winner and he’s also been named to two All-Star teams. Heyward is a career .268/.353/.431 hitter with 107 home runs and 474 RBIs.

OF – Adam Jones Baltimore Orioles
Jones has been one of the most consistent players in baseball over the last decade. The 31-year-old has played at least 154 games eight times in his 11 seasons in the majors. He was an All-Star in 2013 and 2015, when he also won a Gold Glove Award Jones is a career .278/.318/.481 hitter with 240 home runs and 813 RBIs./p>

The roster is broken down by position and includes the player’s name, hometown, high school/college and major league baseball (MLB) team affiliation. The roster is also color-coded to indicate which players are currently active in MLB (green), minor league baseball (red) or have not been drafted/signed by an MLB team (gray).
