NHL Injuries

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional Ice Hockey league in North America currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and seven in Canada. The NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice Hockey League in the world,[1] and one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup the oldest professional sports trophy in North America [2] is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season.

Injuries are a common occurrence in any sport, but they seem to happen more often in hockey due to the contact nature of the sport. Players can get hurt by being hit with a puck, stick, or bodycheck, or they may suffer a fall or collision. When a player gets injured, it not only affects him or her, but also the team as a whole.

An NHL player sustains an average of 1.8 injuries per season that cause him or her to miss at least one game.[3] Given that there are approximately 1,230 NHL games played each season,[4] this means that there are approximately 2,200 injuries that cause players to miss games each season. That’s a lot of injuries!

There are several ways to track NHL injuries. One popular method is Injured Reserve (IR), which is when a team lists a player on IR retroactively to when he or she was injured. This allows teams to temporarily exceed the salary cap while that player is out injured. As of February 1st, 2020, there were 97 players on IR.[5]

Another way to track NHL injuries is through Man Games Lost (MGL). This metric measures how many total “man games” have been missed due to injury and can be used to compare teams across different seasons.[6] For example, as of February 1st, 2020, the team with the most MGL was the Ottawa Senators with 318.[7]

Tracking injuries is important for several reasons. First, it allows us to see which players are most commonly injured and how often they get injured. This information can be used by coaches to help prevent injuries by developing specific Training Programs and changing game strategies. Second, it helps us understand how injuries affect team performance. For example, we might expect teams with more MGL to have worse records than teams with fewer MGL. Finally, tracking injuries can help us identify trends over time such as an increasing number of concussions or other types of injuries.

There are many websites and data sources that track NHL injuries.[8] Some examples include:
