The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional Ice Hockey league in North America currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and 7 in Canada. The history of the Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup is the most storied trophy in all of professional sports Just how did this trophy become the ultimate prize in hockey?
The Stanley Cup was first created in 1892 and was originally known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. It was commissioned by then Governor-General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston. The original cup was acquired from a London jeweler for 10 guineas (10 British pounds at the time, which is about $48 in today’s currency). The cup was intended to be presented to “the championship Hockey Club of the Dominion of Canada.”
The first team to win the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) in 1893. The cup then changed hands between different Canadian teams until it finally made its way south of the border in 1910 when it was won by the Seattle Metropolitans, who were part of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association In 1926, the National Hockey League (NHL) took over as the sole governing body of professional hockey in North America and has been responsible for awarding the Stanley Cup ever since.
The Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup a record 24 times, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13 titles. The Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins have each won it 11 times. No American-based team has won more than five Stanley Cups
