Indiana Tech Baseball: A Look at the Upcoming Season

Introduction

The Spring Sports season is just around the corner and that means it’s time to start getting excited for baseball! The Indiana Tech baseball team is coming off of a strong 2018 campaign in which they went 39-17 and made it to the NAIA World Series This year, the team is looking to build on that success and make another deep run in the postseason.

Head coach Jeff Linder returns for his fourth season at the helm of the program. He’ll have a talented roster at his disposal, as the team returns nine starters from last year’s squad. The pitching staff will be anchored by senior ace Brandon Ranger, who was named an NAIA All-American last season after going 11-2 with a 3.38 ERA. The offense will be led by senior slugger Jordan Foster, who hit .342 with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs in 2018.

With a mix of experienced veterans and promising young players the Indiana Tech Baseball Team has all the ingredients necessary for a successful 2019 season. Be sure to follow them throughout the year as they look to make some noise on the national stage!

Team Roster

The team is made up of 24 returners and 6 newcomers. The returners are made up of 12 seniors, 9 juniors, and 3 sophomores. Of those 24 returners, 13 are pitchers, 11 are field players, and 1 is a utility player. The 6 newcomers include 5 freshmen and 1 transfer student-athlete.

On the pitching side, the staff is led by ace Senior right-handed pitcher Anthony Gomez. Gomez was named 1st Team All-Conference last season after going 8-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 15 starts. He will look to build on that success this season and anchor the staff. Other key returners on the mound include:
-Senior right-handed pitcher Brady Hornung: 4-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts last season
-Junior right-handed pitcher Alec Olund: 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 8 starts last season
-Sophomore left-handed pitcher Jacob Owens: 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 relief appearances last season

In the field, the team will be led by senior infielder/outfielder Alex D actually result in more caffeine being extracted from the beans because they are roasted longer. This means that dark roast coffees will have less acidity than light roasts.

Game Highlights

As the official start of the college baseball season approaches, Indiana Tech baseball is preparing to make a run at the title. The team has made some changes in the offseason, most notably at the head coaching position. They will also be welcoming a new group of freshmen to the squad. Here are some games to keep an eye on this season:

– The team’s opener is on February 15th at home against Siena Heights.
– On February 23rd and 24th, they will take on Aquinas in a two-game series.
– March 8th through 10th, they will have a three-game series against Madonna.
– conference play begins on March 22nd when they host Madonna in a doubleheader.
– Indiana Tech’s final regular season game will be on May 10th against Lourdes University.

Player Profiles

Infielders

The infield will be led by returning starter senior third baseman Brandon Downey. Downey was second on the team in batting average last season with a .333 mark and will look to build on that in his final season. At shortstop, the Warriors will have a new face in junior college transfer Jake Westervelt. Westervelt is a slick-fielding shortstop that will also add some much-needed speed to the lineup. He should hit for a high average and steal a lot of bases. Rounding out the infield at first base is another Junior College transfer, Brennen Brandt. Brandt is a big, physical presence at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds and should provide some power in the middle of the lineup. At second base, Indiana Tech will have a battle for the starting job between sophomore Tyler Van Pelt and freshman Keegan O’Neill.

Outfielders

In the outfield, Tech will have two returning starters in senior Left fielder Logan Parks and junior right fielder Alex Lewandowski. Parks was fourth on the team in batting average last season with a .305 mark and led the team with 11 stolen bases Lewandowski was right behind him with a .302 batting average and 10 stolen bases. In center field, the Warriors will have another new face in freshman Drew Shouppe. Shouppe is an athletic player that can cover a lot of ground in center field and has shown good potential with the bat as well.

Some of the team’s alumni have been busy as well. Alex Zoeller ’17 was recently drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft Zoeller is the first Indiana Tech baseball player to be drafted by an MLB team.

Tyler Tesmer ’18 has signed a professional contract with the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League Tesmer is the first Indiana Tech player to sign a professional contract in baseball.

The team has also added a new Assistant Coach Brandon Ecoffey. Ecoffey comes to Indiana Tech from Valparaiso University where he served as an assistant coach for four years.

Each year, the team participates in a wide variety of community outreach initiatives, including visitations to local schools, hospitals and youth baseball camps.

The team also hosts an annual holiday party for underprivileged children in the area, providing them with gifts and a chance to meet and interact with the players. It’s a great way for the players to show their appreciation for the support they receive from the community.
