NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament is an annual college basketball tournament for women. The tournament is held each April, with the Final Four usually taking place during the first full week of the month. The tournament is organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and draws yearly interest from basketball fans across the country.

Iowa State has a storied history in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament having made 22 appearances in the tournament and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen on nine occasions. The team has also made two Elite Eight appearances (in 1999 and 2000) and one Final Four appearance (in 2000).

In 1975, the Iowa State Cyclones women’s Basketball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament The Cyclones compete in the Big 12 Conference and are currently coached by Bill Fennelly. As of the end of the 2015-16 season, the Cyclones have appeared in a total of 20 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournaments Their most recent appearance came in 2016.

Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament

The Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament is the conference tournament in basketball for the Big 12 Conference. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner of the tournament receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

The Iowa State Cyclones women’s Basketball team has won the tournament five times and made ten total appearances in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Their most recent appearance was in 2019, when they lost to the Baylor Bears in the semi-finals of the Big 12 Conference Women’s basketball tournament

Nancy Fahey

Nancy Fahey was the Head Coach of the Iowa State women’s basketball team from 1985 to 1995. During her time at Iowa State she led the Cyclones to four NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1988.

Fahey was born in 1952 in Peoria, Illinois. She attended Immaculate Heart Academy in Elmhurst, Illinois, before enrolling at Drake University in Des Moines Iowa. At Drake, Fahey played basketball and earned a degree in physical education

fahey began her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Drake University, from 1977 to 1979. She then served as head coach at Bradley University from 1979 to 1985. In 1985, she was hired as the Head Coach of Iowa State University’s women’s basketball team

Under Fahey’s leadership, the Cyclones compiled a record of 145-116 (.557). They made four NCAA Tournament appearances (1986, 1987, 1988, 1994) and won one conference tournament championship (1988). In 1988, Iowa State advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history before losing to Louisiana Tech

Fahey left Iowa State in 1995 to become the Head coach at the University of Illinois She coached the Illini for two seasons (1995-1997) before returning to Drake University as head coach in 1997. She coached Drake for one season (1997-1998) before retiring from coaching altogether.

Bill Fennelly

Bill Fennelly is the current head coach of the Iowa State University women’s basketball team He has been the head coach since 1995. The Iowa State Cyclones are a Division I college basketball team competing in the Big 12 Conference. They are currently coached by Fennelly and play their home games at Hilton Coliseum on the university’s Ames, Iowa campus.

The Cyclones have made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament with a record of 13–14. Their first appearance came in 1997, under head coach Fred Hoiberg. The Cyclones’ most recent appearance came in 2019, where they defeated Central Michigan in the first round before losing to Ohio State in the second round.

In 2000, Fennelly led the Cyclones to their first ever NCAA tournament win, defeating Notre Dame in the first round before losing to Vanderbilt in the second round. In 2001, he led them to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance, where they lost to Duke. In 2002, he again led them to their first NCAA tournament win, defeating Minnesota in the first round before losing to Oklahoma in the second round. In 2005, he led them again to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance and their first Elite Eight appearance, where they lost to Baylor. The Cyclones made it back-to-back Elite Eight appearances under Fennelly in 2006, where they lost to Tennessee.

In 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons, Fennelly led the Cyclones back-to-back Big 12 Conference regular season championships for only second time & was named Naismith Coach of The Year semifinalist both seasons as well as a WBCA Regional Coach of The Year both seasons & guided team to program’s fifth Sweet Sixteen berth & third Elite Eight appearance during 2013 postseason run which also included program’s 500th victory during Regular Season finale vs. Baylor on March 3 & sixth Big 12 tournament title with win over West Virginia on March 10 en route to 29-6 overall record that stands as third most victories in program history behind only 34-win campaigns during 2000-01 (34-4) & 2001-02 (34-3) seasons & ISU’s All-time leading scorer Chevaughn Scales became 29th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points mark with 27 points scored during regular season finale against Baylor on March 3 .

2017–18 Iowa State Cyclones women’s Basketball team

The 2017–18 Iowa State Cyclones women’s Basketball Team represents Iowa State University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women’s Basketball season The Cyclones, led by fifth year head coach Bill Fennelly, play their home games at Hilton Coliseum and were in members of the Big 12 Conference. They finished the season 25–8, 12–6 in Big 12 play to finish in third place. They loose in the semifinals of the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament to Baylor. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament which they reached the second round where they lost to Missouri.

They receive an at-large bid of the NCAA Women’s basketball tournament where they defeated New Mexico State in the first round before losing to Louisville in the second round.
