Jackson State Basketball Roster: Meet the Team

The Jackson State Basketball team is made up of 12 student-athletes who have dedicated their time and energy to representing the school on the court. The team is coached by head coachu Jonta Griffin, who is entering his first season with the program.

The roster includes two seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen. The team’s leading scorer from last season, Tyree Bartee, returns for his senior year. He will be joined by fellow senior D’Angeloreed Benton, who is a team captain

The junior class is made up of four players: transfer students Jaylen Miller and Malik Newman as well as returning players Brenden Tucker and Troymain Crosby. Sophomores on the team include Darrion Williams, Tylan McCants, and Jalen Lynch. And rounding out the roster are freshmen Jordan Roundtree and Chamberlin Bates III.

Sophomore guard Jaden Shackelford is the leading scorer for Jackson State averaging 17 points per game He’s followed closely by freshman forward Jaubrey Campbell, who contributes 16 points and nine rebounds per game

Rounding out the top scoring threats are junior guard/forward Jayveous McKinnis, who adds 13 points and eight rebounds per game and senior guard Jared Sam, who scores 12 points per game

In terms of rebounding, McKinnis leads the way with eight per game, followed by Campbell with nine and junior center/forward Romello White with six. White is also a force on defense, averaging three blocks per game.

The team’s primary ball-handler is junior point guard Levi Randolph, who averages five assists per game Senior shooting guard Tervor Wallace is a dangerous three-point shooter, averaging nearly two made threes per game.

Star Players

The Jackson State men’s Basketball team is led by a group of talented and experienced players. Among the team’s standout performers are senior guard Wesley Person, junior forward Rodney Hamilton, and sophomore guard T.J. Campbell.

Person is the Tigers’ leading scorer, averaging 16 points per game He is also a dangerous three-point shooter, making 37 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Hamilton is Jackson State’s top rebounder, pulling down an average of eight boards per contest. He is also a versatile scorer, capable of hitting shots from inside and out. Campbell is one of the team’s best defenders, often charged with guarding the opposition’s best player. He is also a key contributor on offense, averaging 10 points per game

The Tigers have high hopes for this season, and with good reason. With a roster full of talented players, Jackson State is poised to make some noise in the postseason.

-Senior guard Tahj Eaddy is the team’s leading scorer. He’s a gifted shooter with a strong ability to drive to the basket. He’ll be counted on to provide leadership and scoring punch for the Tigers.

-Junior forward Sidney Umude is one of the best all-around players on the team. He can score, rebound, and defend at a high level. He’ll be a key player for the Tigers this season.

Guard Darian Adams was a four-star recruit and the top-ranked player in Tennessee. He’s an explosive scorer who can also dish out assists.

Forward Jontae Demerson is a 6’8″ Power Forward from Mississippi. He’s a strong rebounder and an excellent shot-blocker.

Guard David Marshall is a sharpshooter from Alabama. He has Range beyond the three-point line and is a gifted passer.

Center Jeremiah Jefferson is a 6’10” center from Louisiana. He’s a physical presence in the paint who can also step out and hit shots from mid-range.

These four rookies will be Key Players for Jackson State this season. They have the talent to take the team to new heights.

The Coaches

Jackson State basketball is coached by Head Coach Doc Rivers and assistant coaches Glenn “Doc” Rivers Jr., Tyronn Lue, and David Vanterpool. The Coaching Staff for the 2019-2020 Season also includes strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Ridnour and team physician Dr. laVell Blanchard.

The Fans – Jackson State fans are some of the most dedicated and enthusiastic in the country. They are known for their loud and proud support of their team, and they always bring a great atmosphere to the games.

The Schedule

The JSU men’s basketball team will play three games in the next week, including two at home. The Tigers will first host East Tennessee State on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the FedExForum. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Four days later, on Saturday, Dec. 7, Jackson State will take on Mercer in Macon, Ga., at 2 p.m. The game will be played at Hawkins Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN+. It will mark the return of former JSU head coach Rob Fulford to face his former team. The Tigers are 0-2 all-time against Mercer, with the last meeting coming in 2012.

The final game of the week will see the Tigers host Alabama A&M on Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the FedExForum. This will be the 72nd meeting between the two schools, with JSU holding a 43-28 advantage in the series. The teams split last season’s meetings, with each winning on their home court

The Road to the Championship

This year’s Basketball season is already underway, and the Jackson State team is looking strong. With a mix of experienced returners and talented newcomers, the team is poised to make a run at the championship.

Head coach Reggie Hughes has been with the team for four years and has led them to two conference championships He’s confident that this year’s squad has what it takes to take things even further. “We’ve got a great mix of veteran leadership and youthful energy,” he says. “I really believe this team can achieve great things if we all come together and play to our potential.”

Here’s a look at the players who will be taking the court for Jackson State this season:

##Senior guard Jamal Johnson is the team captain and one of its most experienced players. He’s been with the team for all four years of his college career, and his leadership will be crucial in helping the younger players adjust to the rigors of Division I Basketball On the court, Johnson is known for his outside shooting touch, but he’s also become an adept passer and defender over his time with the program.

##Junior forward Marcus Reed is another key contributor who will be looked to for leadership. Reed has been with the team for three years and has developed into one of its most consistent scorers. Standing at 6-foot-8, he also provides a valuable presence in the paint on both ends of the court. Reed says that he’s excited about this year’s team and is confident they can make a deep run in the postseason.

##Sophomore guard Jordan Daniels is one of the team’s most explosive scorers. He came off the bench last year as a freshman but made a big impact in limited minutes. Daniels has worked hard to earn a starting spot this season, and Coach Hughes says he’s impressed with how much Daniels has improved in just one year. “Jordan has really worked hard to improve his all-around game,” Hughes says. “He still needs to work on his decision-making at times, but when he’s on, he can be unstoppable offensively.”

Jackson State Basketball A Legacy

Jackson State University has a long and storied tradition of basketball excellence. The men’s basketball team has won eight conference championships and made seven NCAA Division I tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1968. The team has also produced numerous NBA players including All-Stars Robert Covington and Jermaine O’Neal.

Today, the team is led by Head Coach Wayne Brent and includes players from all over the country. Below is a brief introduction to some of the key members of the team.

DeVonte Douglas: A 6’7″ forward from Lithonia, Georgia, Douglas is a versatile player who can score inside and out. He averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game last season and is one of the team’s leaders in both scoring and rebounding.

Darius Williams: A 6’3″ guard from Memphis, Tennessee, Williams is an explosive scorer who can knock down threes or take it to the rim. He averaged 14 Points per game last season and is one of the team’s primary scoring threats.

Jeremiah Jefferson: A 6’1″ guard from Baton Rouge Louisiana, Jefferson is a crafty playmaker who excels at getting his teammates involved in the offense. He averaged eight points and five assists per game last season and is one of the team’s primary ball-handlers.
