Jacksonville State University has announced its new head basketball coach Coach John Calipari will take over the program starting next season.

Jacksonville State University has hired former Alabama men’s basketball player and Assistant Coach John Brady as its new Head Coach the school announced Friday.

Brady, who played at Alabama from 1983-87, has been an assistant coach at the University of Georgia since 2011. He was previously the head coach at Samford University from 1995-99 and at Louisiana State University from 2000-08.

“John Brady is a good man and a very good basketball coach ” said JSU president John M. Beehler in a statement. “He understands our tradition here at Jacksonville State and our commitment to winning in a first-class manner.”

Brady will be introduced at a press conference on Monday.

The New Era

Just over a month ago, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks said goodbye to an era. On March 19th, head women’s basketball coach Rick Pietri announced his retirement after serving the program for 27 seasons. Since then, the team has been on a coaching search to find Pietri’s replacement.

fast forward to April 25th, when Jacksonville State University announced that Johnnie Lambert would be the new head women’s basketball coach Lambert comes to JSU after serving as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech for the last three seasons.

In his three years with the Lady Techsters Louisiana Tech won two regular season conference championships and made three NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2019. Prior to his time at Louisiana Tech Lambert was an assistant coach at South Alabama for two seasons.

Lambert is a Jacksonville, Alabama native and played his collegiate basketball at Birmingham Southern College where he was a two-time All-Southern collegiate athletic conference selection. He is also a member of the Birmingham Southern Athletics Hall of Fame

The New Culture

When Jacksonville State hired Mike White as its new men’s basketball coach in April, the school was getting more than just a proven winner.

White, who led Louisville to the Sweet 16 in his only season as Head Coach there, is known for his ability to develop players and create a winning culture.

“It starts with having the right kind of people in your program,” White said. “We want guys who are committed to getting better every day and who are willing to sacrifice for the team.”

White said he wants his teams to play an up-tempo, exciting brand of basketball that will make Jacksonville State a tough out for any opponent.

“We’re going to play fast and we’re going to play aggressive,” he said. “We want to put pressure on the other team on both ends of the floor.”

In addition to instilling a winning culture, White said he plans to use his platform as Head coach to help give back to the Jacksonville community.

“I want our players and our staff to be involved in the community,” he said. “We want to be good citizens and we want people in this town to know that we’re here to help.”

The New System

Jacksonville State’s new Basketball Coach Ray Harper, is implementing a new system this season. The system is based on fast-paced play and aggressive defense. Harper believes that this system will help the team to be more successful than in previous years.

The New Philosophy

Jacksonville State’s new basketball coach Ray Harper, is bringing a new philosophy to the team. Harper believes that by focusing on the process and not the results, the Gamecocks will be able to build a winning culture.

“It’s about every day, coming in and getting better,” Harper said. “It’s not about wins and losses. It’s about having a culture where these guys come in and they’re committed to getting better every day.”

The new philosophy was put to the test in the team’s first game of the season, a loss to Troy. Despite the loss, Harper was pleased with the effort he saw from his team.

“I was really proud of our guys,” Harper said. “They competed their tails off.”

The Gamecocks will look to get their first win under Harper when they take on North Carolina A&T on November 17.

The New Path

Jacksonville State’s new Basketball Coach Jay Wright is looking to lead the team in a new direction.

Wright was hired in April after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama He inherits a Jacksonville State team that went 14-17 last season and has not made the NCAA Tournament since 1998.

Wright’s hiring.is part of a larger effort by Jacksonville State athletics director Greg Seitz to rejuvenate the program. Seitz has also hired new coaches for the football and women’s basketball teams in the past year.

Wright said his goals for the team are to improve its overall record and to make the NCAA tournament He said he believes the team has the talent to achieve those goals.

“We’ve got to establish a new culture and a new standard of excellence for Jacksonville State basketball ” Wright said. “I’m confident we can do that.”
