NCAA tournament history

The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils basketball team has a long and storied history in the NCAA Tournament The team has appeared in the tournament 19 times, with their first appearance coming in 1981. They have made it to the Sweet Sixteen three times and the Elite Eight once.

The Delta Devils have had some Great players over the years, including Hall of Famer Jerry West Other notable alumni include Charles Barkley Karl Malone and Scottie Pippen

Post-season history

Since joining Division I in 1982, Mississippi Valley State University’s men’s basketball team has appeared in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament four times. Their combined record is 1–4.

MVSU made their first NCAA appearance in 1985 as a #16 seed in the Midwest Region. They lost to eventual National Champion Villanova in the first round by a score of 92–52.

In 1986, they made their second NCAA appearance as a #14 seed in the Midwest Region. They again lost in the first round, this time to Louisville by a score of 97–54.

In 1987, they made their third NCAA appearance as a #15 seed in the Midwest Region. This time they won their first round game against 6th-seeded Alabama by a score of 80–75, becoming only the fourth #15 seed ever to win an NCAA tournament game (the others being Richmond in 1991, Santa Clara in 1993, and Coppin State in 1997). They then lost to 3rd-seeded Syracuse in the second round by a score of 77–46.

Their most recent appearance was in 1999 as a #16 seed in the Midwest Region. They again lost their first round game, this time to Duke by a score of 97–60.

Notable players

Mississippi Valley State University men’s basketball has fielded some very talented players over the course of its history. The most notable player in program history is NBA Hall of Famer Jerry West who played two seasons for the Delta Devils from 1960-62. Other notable Mississippi Valley State alumni include:
