The NBA’s top double-double leaders: analysis

A double-double is when a player records a double-digit number total in two of five statistical categories, which include points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. The term was coined by former Houston Rockets Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

In the National Basketball Association (NBA), a double-double is achieved when a player records ten or more in two of five statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots. The most double-doubles in an NBA season is held by Oscar Robertson who achieved 41 in the 1961–62 season. Wilt Chamberlain had 227 in his career and 38 in the 1968–69 season. Bill Russell leads all players with 222.

Since the 2000–01 season, when Artest debuted, Dirk Nowitzki and Lebron James are the only players to have recorded at least 50 double-doubles each in a single season. In that same time frame, Nowitzki and Kevin Garnett are the only players to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game for 11 consecutive seasons. Only three other players (Elton Brand, Shawn Marion, and Pau Gasol) have done so for even eight seasons. In 2012–13 Kevin Love became just the 11th player to average 30 points and 15 rebounds per game over an entire season since 1955 enclave when such stats were first tracked regularly. The last player prior to Love to achieve those numbers was Karl Malone 25 years earlier in 1988 enclave.

Since being drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996 out of Louisiana State University (LSU), Shaquille O’Neal has appeared in 1,207 games and amassed 948 double-doubles, ranking him second among active players behind only Kevin Garnett (1,026). O’Neal holds numerous records involving double-doubles: he is both the youngest player to ever record a double-double (19 years old) and the oldest player to average at least 10 points and 10 rebounds per game over an entire season (40 years old). He played in 1,052 consecutive games from 1994 until 2011—the fifth longest streak in league history—during which he recorded 837 double-doubles; this is more than any other player has accumulated over such a span of games. On January 10th 2007 against the Dallas Mavericks O’Neal became only the third player ever to reach 1,000 career double-doubles; he accomplished this feat faster than any other player in NBA history

In recent years Russell Westbrook has become well known for his ability to rack up double-doubles; he did so on 62 occasions during the 2016–17 season to set an NBA record. He then broke his own record by notching 67 double-doubles during the 2017–18 campaign. Among active players Westbrook ranks first in career average per game (34.4), second in total number of recorded double-doubles (102), and fourth in career point totals (13,687).
