The NBA Draft is tonight at 7pm EST
The 2018 NBA Draft will be held tonight, Thursday, June 21st at 7pm EST at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This year’s draft is loaded with talent and is being considered one of the deepest drafts in recent memory.
Who is eligible for the draft and what are the requirements?
The NBA draft is an annual event in which the thirty teams that make up the National Basketball Association (NBA) select young players who have not played Professional Basketball before. The main purpose of the draft is to inflate the number of young, talented players available to each team in order to provide more competitive balance throughout the league.
In order to be eligible for the draft, players must be at least 19 years old and one year removed from their High School graduation class. Players who meet these criteria but did not go to college are known as “international players” and are often drafted directly out of high school
Players who are eligible but did not declare themselves for the draft by the early-entry deadline are automatically entered into the next year’s draft.
The top prospects in this year’s draft
The 2020 NBA draft will be held virtually tonight, at 7pm EST.
This year’s freshman class is loaded with talent, and there are a number of intriguing prospects who will be looking to make their mark in the NBA.
Here is a look at some of the top prospects in this year’s draft:
1. Lamelo Ball – PG, 6’7″, Illawarra Hawks (NBL)
2. Anthony Edwards – SG, 6’5″, Georgia Bulldogs
3. James Wiseman – C, 7’1″, Memphis Tigers
4. Obi Toppin – PF, 6’9″, Dayton Flyers
5. Killian Hayes – PG, 6’5″, Ratiopharm Ulm (BBL)
How the NBA Draft works- the lottery, the combine, etc.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) draft is an annual event in which the thirty franchises in the league select new players for their rosters. The Draft Lottery held before the draft, determines the order of selection for the fourteen teams that did not make the playoffs in the previous season. These teams are given chances of receiving Ping-Pong balls based on their win-loss record; these balls are used to choose the order of selection in the draft. The lottery winner would then receive the first pick. In total, 60 players are selected during the draft.
The NBA also holds a pre-draft camp, now known as the NBA Combine in which players perform various physical and mental tests in front of personnel from all 30 NBA teams These tests include sprinting, agility testing, and shooting. Players also undergo interviews with NBA personnel and take a written examination on basic rules of basketball and knowledge about NBA offenses and defenses. All this information is used by teams to further evaluate prospects and determine which players to select in the draft.
NBA Mock drafts- who will go where?
With the NBA Draft just hours away, mock drafts are making their final predictions on who will go where.
The early consensus seems to be that the New Orleans Pelicans will draft Zion Williamson with the first pick. This comes as no surprise, as Williamson is widely considered to be one of the best players in the country.
After Williamson, things start to get a bit more unpredictable. The Memphis Grizzlies are predicted to draft Ja Morant with the second pick, but there is a chance that they could go with RJ Barrett instead.
The rest of the lottery is also up in the air, with a Number of players who could potentially go anywhere. Players like Coby White Jarrett Culver, and De’Andre Hunter all have a chance of going in the top ten
It should be an exciting night for basketball fans as we wait to see where all of these young players will end up.
What trades can we expect to see on draft night?
As the NBA Draft approaches, fans and analysts alike begin to speculate which teams will make trades on draft night. While some trades are done in order to move up or down in the draft order others are done in order to exchange players or draft picks for assets that can help improve the team. Here are some of the trade rumors that have been circulating leading up to the NBA draft
What are each team’s needs heading into the draft?
The 2020 NBA draft is tonight at 7pm EST and there is a lot of speculation surrounding which players will be taken by which teams.
There are a few teams that stand out as having needs heading into the draft. The Charlotte Hornets could use some help in the backcourt, as they lost Kemba Walker in Free agency last year and are currently relying on Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier to handle the majority of the ball-handling duties.
The Los Angeles Clippers also have a need in the backcourt after trading away Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as part of the Paul George deal last offseason. They currently have Patrick Beverley and Landry Shamet, but no real star playmaker that can create his own shot.
Up front, the Boston Celtics could use some help with their rebounding as they were one of the worst teams in the league in that department last season. They also don’t have a true center on their roster, so that could be another position they look to address in the draft.
The Golden State Warriors will be without Klay Thompson for most, if not all, of next season as he recovers from an Achilles injury so they will likely look to add another shooter to their roster tonight.
It will be interesting to see how everything plays out tonight and which team ends up with which player.
Sleepers in this year’s draft- players who may be drafted outside of the lottery who could make an impact
This year’s NBA Draft is filled with talent, but there are a few players who may be drafted outside of the lottery who could make an impact. Here are a few of these “sleepers”:
Avery Bradley, PG, Texas- A tenacious defender with a improving jump shot Bradley has the potential to be a very good point guard in the league. He needs to work on his decision-making and playmaking, but he has the potential to be a very good player
Cole Aldrich, C, Kansas- A big body with a nice touch around the basket, Aldrich was one of the best defenders in college basketball last year. He needs to work on his conditioning and his strength, but he has the potential to be a very good player in the league.
Terrico White, SG, Mississippi- An athletic wing player with a nice Jump Shot White has the potential to be a very good player in the league. He needs to work on his ball-handling and decision-making, but he has the potential to be a very good player.
Busts of the draft- players who are overhyped and will likely not pan out
Each year, there are a few players who are drafted much higher than they probably should have been. These are the players that end up being busts, or players who don’t pan out the way they were expected too.
In tonight’s NBA Draft there are a few players that fit this bill. One player is Zion Williamson who is expected to be drafted first overall by the New Orleans Pelicans Williamson is a very talented player, but there are concerns about his injury history and his ability to translate his game to the NBA level.
Another player who could be considered a bust is RJ Barrett, who is expected to be drafted second overall by the Memphis Grizzlies Barrett is a very talented scorer, but there are concerns about his defense and whether or not he can be a true leader on an NBA team
There are also a few players who are flying under the radar that could turn out to be sleeper picks in tonight’s draft. These are players who may not be as hyped up as some of the other prospects, but who have the potential to be Great players in the NBA. Some of these sleepers include Tyler Herro and Bol Bol
So tune in tonight at 7pm EST to see which players will hear their names called in the 2019 NBA Draft And keep an eye out for these busts and sleepers – they could very well determine how successful (or unsuccessful) each team drafting them will be in the years to come.
The impact of COVID-19 on the NBA draft
The impact of COVID-19 on the NBA Draft is significant. The virus has forced the cancellation of the combine, where college players showcase their skills in front of scouts. It has also led to the cancellation of many college basketball games, making it difficult for scouts to assess players. As a result, the draft is likely to be more unpredictable than usual.
