Nolan Smith was born on September 10, 1988, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of basketball player Psyche Smith and the late NBA player Derek Smith Nolan Smith played his High School basketball for Mount Saint Joseph high school in Baltimore. He was ranked as the number one point guard in the country by ESPN during his senior year. Nolan Smith played collegiate basketball for Duke University from 2006 to 2011. In his senior year, he was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press and the National Association of Basketball Coaches

Nolan Smith was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 21st overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft He played two seasons for the Trail Blazers before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013. He played one season for the Pelicans before being waived in 2014. He then signed with BC Zalgiris of Lithuania, where he played for one season. In 2015, he signed with Panathinaikos of Greece, where he played for two seasons. Nolan Smith returned to the NBA in 2017, signing a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers He did not play in an NBA game during that season and was subsequently released by the Cavaliers.

In 2014, Smith suffered a devastating Knee Injury that caused him to miss the entire season. He battled back and made a successful return to the court in 2015, but he was never able to recapture his previous form and he was ultimately released by the Blazers in 2016.

Smith appeared in 55 games (seven starts) as a rookie with Portland in 2011-12, averaging 4.0 points and 1.2 assists in 11.4 minutes per game. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans on July 12, 2012, but was waived by New Orleans on October 29, 2012.

Smith then signed with the Texas Legends of the NBA D-League on November 2, 2012. He was recalled by the Mavericks on April 7, 2013 and appeared in four games with Dallas to close out the season. The Mavericks did not extend a qualifying offer to Smith, making him an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2013.

He joined the Boston Celtics for training camp in September 2013 but was later waive by Boston on October 25, 2013 after appearing in seven preseason games On December 3, 2013, he was acquired by the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA D-League On December 23, he signed a 10-day contract with the Golden State Warriors but was not retained by Golden State following the expiration of his deal. He finished out the season with Santa Cruz before being traded to the Maine Red Claws on August 6, 2014 as part of a three-team trade involving six players and two future second Round Draft picks..
