The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series is the annual championship tournament of college baseball in the United States The World Series has been conducted every year since 1960. In that time, only four schools have captured the elusive title of NJCAA World Series Champions more than once. Of those four, NorthWest athletic conference (NWAC) member Bellevue College (BC) is the only school to have won back-to-back titles and the only school in NWAC history to win three NJCAA World Series Championships.

BC’s first title came in 2003 under Head Coach Mark Sorensen. The Bulldogs defeated Joliet Junior College 5-4 in 11 innings in the Championship game It was a come from behind victory for BC as they were down 4-0 going into the bottom of the 9th inning. They scored 3 runs in the 9th to tie it up and then won it with a walk off RBI single by Jesse Ivashetz in the 11th inning.

The second title for Bellevue came in 2006 under head coach Mark Sorensen. Once again, the Bulldogs showed their resilience by coming from behind to win the Championship game This time they were down 3-0 going into the 8th inning before scoring 2 runs in both the 8th and 9th innings to force Extra Innings against San Jacinto College–North Campus. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Braden McKay hit a walk off RBI single to score pinch runner Brandon Cooper and give Bellevue their second NJCAA World Series Championship in 4 years.

In 2009, Bellevue completed their run of back-to-back titles with their third NJCAA World Series Championship under Head Coach Mark Sorensen. The Bulldogs defeated Iowa Western Community College 6-3 in that year’s championship game. It was a close game throughout with neither team leading by more than 2 runs at any point. Bellevue broke a 3-3 tie with 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and held on for the 6-3 victory and their third NJCAA World Series Championship in 6 years.

Since 2009, no team from NWAC has been able to win an NJCAA World Series Championship, but several have come close including Tacoma Community College who made it to back-to-back Championship Games in 2014 & 2015, ultimately coming up short both times. The quest for another NWAC team to bring home an NJCAA World Series Championship continues this year with several teams having a legitimate chance at winning it all. Regardless of who ultimately comes out on top, it is certain that NWAC baseball will be well represented at this year’s NJCAA World Series tournament
