Peter Mooney: A Baseball Journey – Quotes

From humble beginnings in Sydney, Nova Scotia, to big dreams of playing professional baseball Peter Mooney has had quite the journey.

“Baseball was my outlet, it gave me a chance to be somebody that I wasn’t. It gave me confidence that I could do things that I never thought I could do before,” he said.

And he did just that. In 2013, Mooney was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round of the MLB Draft – quite the accomplishment for a Canadian ballplayer.

“It was a surreal experience, getting that call from the Cubs saying that they were going to draft me was an incredible feeling and it still hasn’t sunk in five years later.”

But his journey didn’t stop there. After bouncing around the minors for a few years, Mooney found himself at spring training with the Baltimore Orioles this year – one step away from his Big League dream.

And despite not making the cut, he’s not giving up just yet.

“It was an unbelievable experience being able to learn from some of the best players in the world and I took a lot away from it. I know what it takes now to get to that level and I’m going to continue working hard until I get there.”
