The History of Purdue Northwest Basketball

Purdue West Basketball is a Division II basketball team that competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference The team is a relatively new addition to the Purdue University system, having been established in 2017 following the merger of Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central. Purdue Northwest inherited the Division II Basketball Program from Purdue Calumet, which had been competing since 1979. The team has quickly made a name for itself, finishing its inaugural season with a 20-10 record and making it to the semi-finals of the conference tournament

While the team is new, the history of basketball at both Purdue Calumet and Purdue North Central runs deep. Purdue Calumet won back-to-back Division II National Championships in 1985 and 1986, and has made nine trips to the Division II National Tournament overall. Purdue North Central made two trips to the Division II National Tournament in 2003 and 2004. The two schools have combined for six GLVC titles and numerous All-Americans.

The Coaches of Purdue Northwest Basketball

In just four short years, the men’s Basketball Program at Purdue Northwest has risen to new heights. The team has won two conference championships and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament.

But the success of the program starts with the Coaching Staff Head Coach John SHADLEY and Assistant Coach Terry BOHN have built a strong foundation for the team.

“Our goal is to always be competitive and to put a product on the floor that our fans can be proud of,” said Bohn. “We want to win, but we also want to do it the right way.”

The coaching staff has instilled a hard work ethic in their players, and it has paid off. The team has seen immense success in a short amount of time, and shadley attributes much of that to the character of his players.

“We have a great group of guys who are coachable and work extremely hard,” said SHADLEY. “ They believe in what we’re doing, and that’s been a big part of our success.”

As the team continues to improve, one thing is certain – with John Shadley and Terry Bohn at the helm, Purdue West Basketball is a team on the rise.

-Sophomore Zachary Hayes was named First Team All-Conference and was an honorable mention for All-Region. He led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game
-Junior Robert Johnson was named Second Team All-Conference and was an honorable mention for All-Region. He averaged 15.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game
-Senior Danzel Butler was named Third Team All-Conference and was an honorable mention for All-Region. He averaged 13.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Guards:
-Senior Transfer student, Deiontae Johnson was named First Team All-Conference and led the team in assists, averaging 5 per game.
--junior college transfer, Devon Dixon was named Second Team All-Conference and averaged 14 points per game while shooting 45% from three point range.
-Sophomore Javon Freeman was named to the Conference’s All-Freshman team after averaging 10 points per game off of the bench.
