Since its founding in 1974, the RWU Women’s Basketball team has been a consistently competitive presence in NCAA Division III athletics. In recent years however, the team has begun to see a surge in success, culminating in an appearance in the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship game. With a core group of talented and experienced players returning for the 2017-2018 season the team is poised to continue its ascent among the ranks of Division III basketball programs

The Team’s Success
In just her second season at the helm of the program, Head Coach Katie Smith has led the RWU women’s basketball team to new heights. The team has compiled a 20-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in conference play good for first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). Their 20 wins are tied for the most in a single season in program history, while their 16 conference victories are a new school record Under Smith’s leadership, the team has also earned its first-ever national ranking, coming in at #25 in the most recent USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

Since the 2014-2015 season, RWU Women’s Basketball has seen incredible growth and success.
In just four years, the team has gone from having a record of 5-21 to an impressive 18-10. They’ve also made it to the playoffs three years in a row, something that no other team in RWU history has done.
The team is led by head coach Kelly Thompson, who was named the 2018 Coach of the Year by the Rhode Island Basketball Coaches Association. Under her guidance, the team has developed a hardworking culture and a strong sense of sisterhood.

The Team’s Record
