Sandhills Community College first fielded a men’s basketball team in the fall of 1972. The inaugural Head Coach was Charles “Lefty” Driesell, who would go on to have a Hall of Fame career at the University of Maryland The team played its first game on November 11, 1972, against Wake Forest junior college In their second season, the Flyers made it to the NJCAA Division I National Championship game, where they lost to Chipola Junior College

In 1975, Coach Driesell left to take the head coaching position at James Madison University, and was replaced by Pete Germany. Under Germany’s leadership, the Flyers won back-to-back NJCAA Division I National Championships in 1977 and 1978. In 1979, Coach Germany was named NJCAA Coach of the Year. He would go on to coach at Old Dominion University and then return to SCC in 1990.

The Sandhills men’s Basketball team has appeared in eleven NJCAA Division I National Championship games, winning five times (1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982). They have also won fourteen conference championships and made twenty-seven appearances in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament
