The Slovakian Hockey Federation

Slovakia has come a long way since the Velvet Revolution in 1989 that saw the country become an independent state. One area where they have truly made great strides is in the national sport of hockey. The Slovakian Hockey Federation was founded in 1993 and became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1994. They are now considered one of the top hockey nations in the world.

The Slovakian men’s National Team has made seven appearances in the IIHF World Championships with their best finish coming in 2000 when they won bronze. They have also participated in five Olympic Games most recently in 2018, where they finished seventh. The women’s National Team has not been as successful, but they have appeared in four World Championships and three Olympic Games

The country has produced many NHL players over the years, such as former Stanley Cup champions Marian Hossa and Zdeno Chara In recent years Slovakia has sent more and more players to juniors and the American Hockey League with hopes of someday making it to the NHL. The Slovakian Junior National Team

The Slovakian U16 National Team

Slovakian Hockey Players in the NHL

Slovakia has become increasingly prevalent in the NHL recently with several players making an impact on the league. Some of the most notable Slovakian hockey players in the NHL include Marian Gaborik, Zdeno Chara and Marian Hossa.

Gaborik, who plays for the Los Angeles Kings is a three-time NHL All-Star and was a member of Slovakia’s 2010 World Championship team.
