Goodwin’s Major League Baseball career began in 1890 when he played one game as a replacement player for the Cleveland Spiders. The following year he became a regular player for the Spiders and played with them until 1895. He then played for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms from 1896 to 1898. In 1899 he returned to the Cleveland Spiders and played with them until they disbanded in 1900. He finished his Major League career that year with the Chicago Cubs

Goodwin continued to play Professional Baseball until he was forty-five years old. He retired from baseball after the 1913 season. During his twenty-six year professional career he played 2,033 games and had 7,213 hits (a batting average of .308). He also hit 115 home runs and stole 541 bases (an average of 23 per season).
