Nickel was not highly recruited out of High School but he proved to be a Valuable Player for the Waves. He was a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection and finished his career ranked in the top 10 in Pepperdine history in three-point field goals made (192), three-point field goal percentage (.393), and free throw percentage (.853).
After going undrafted in the 2017 NBA draft Nickel has had stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers Summer League teams. He has also played professionally in Israel and Germany.
Most recently, Nickel has been playing for the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League In 32 games for South Bay this season, he is averaging 10.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game

Tyler Nickel was born and raised in the small town of Oelwein, Iowa. His parents both worked long hours at the local factory, so Tyler spent a lot of his time shooting hoops at the park by himself. He dreamed of one day playing in the NBA, but he knew that it would be a long shot.

A 6’3″ guard from North Carolina Tyler was a late bloomer who didn’t start playing organized basketball until he was a sophomore in high school Despite his lack of experience, Tyler quickly developed into one of the top players in his state. He was a four-year starter at North Mecklenburg high school and he led his team to the state semifinals as a senior.
Despite his impressive high school career, Tyler was not heavily recruited by college basketball programs. He ended up signing with Appalachian State where he played four years and finished his career as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Tyler is now back home in Charlotte, working as a personal trainer and hoping to get a shot at playing professionally overseas.

In Tyler Nickel’s senior year of high school he was being recruited by some smaller colleges, but he had his sights set on playing for a Division I school. Unfortunately, he wasn’t getting any interest from any Division I schools. He was about to give up on his dream of playing Division I Basketball when he got a call from the coach of a small Division II school, Hillsdale College. The coach told him that they were starting a new Basketball Program and they wanted him to be a part of it. Tyler decided to take a chance and go to Hillsdale.
Tyler had an immediate impact on the team. He was the leading scorer and rebounder on a team that went 15-13 in its first season. The next year, Tyler helped lead the team to a 21-9 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. In his junior year, Tyler was named the Great Lakes collegiate athletic conference Player of the Year as he led the team to a 25-7 record and another appearance in the NCAA Tournament
Tyler’s senior year was even better than his junior year. He was again named the GLIAC Player of the Year as he led the team to a 29-4 record and a trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II tournament. Tyler ended his college career as Hillsdale’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.
Unfortunately, Tyler’s story does not have a happy ending. After graduating from college, he was not drafted by any NBA team He spent some time playing professionally in Europe, but he was never able to make it back to the United States Today, Tyler Nickel is living in obscurity, working as a substitute teacher in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. But for those who saw him play, he will always be remembered as one of the best basketball players they’ve ever seen.
