What ever happened to those Uconn NBA players? Here’s a quick update on where they are now.
Uconn’s Kemba Walker
In 2011, Kemba Walker led the UConn Huskies to an NCAA championship cementing his place in Uconn Basketball History He was drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats that same year and has been with the team ever since. Walker is a three-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2019.
Uconn’s Rudy Gay
Rudy Gay is one of the more recognizable names to come out of UConn in recentmemory, and for good reason. He was one of the best scorers in the nation during his two years in Storrs, and was a big part of the Huskies’ NCAA Championship team in 2004. After being drafted 8th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2006, Gay has had a very successful NBA career, spending time with the Memphis Grizzlies Toronto Raptors Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs. He is currently a free agent
Uconn’s Jeremy Lamb
Jeremy Lamb was drafted 12th overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2012 NBA draft He played two seasons for the Rockets before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 2014. Lamb averaged 9.7 points per game during his time with the Hornets and was eventually traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 2016. He is currently a free agent
Uconn’s Andre Drummond
Andre Drummond was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Pistons in 2012. He is a two-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2016. He is currently averaging 15.0 points and 13.8 rebounds per game
Uconn’s Shabazz Napier
Shabazz Napier was the final piece of an unlikely National Championship puzzle for the Connecticut Huskies in 2014. A late bloomer who didn’t even start as a freshman, Napier developed into one of the most complete players in the country by the time he was done in Storrs. He was named the American Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament as a senior, carrying UConn to a Cinderella run that included victories over Florida, Michigan State and Kentucky.
Napier was drafted 24th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 2014 and has bounced around the league since then, playing for the Miami Heat Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves He is currently a Free Agent
Uconn’s Hasheem Thabeet
Now that we’re a few years removed from the 2011 NBA Draft it’s time to take a look back and see where all the former UConn players are now. In this edition, we check in on Hasheem Thabeet, who was drafted second overall by the Memphis Grizzlies
Thabeet averaged 10.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game during his rookie season with the Grizzlies. However, he struggled mightily with foul trouble and was eventually relegated to a bench role. He was traded to the Houston Rockets midway through his second season and then waived a few months later.
Thabeet then bounced around the NBA, playing for the Portland Trail Blazers Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons before finally settling down with the San Antonio Spurs in 2016. He appeared in just two games for the Spurs last season and is currently a free agent
Uconn’s Ray Allen
Ray Allen is a former professional basketball player who is best known for his time with the Boston Celtics with whom he won an NBA Championship in 2008. He also played for the Seattle SuperSonics Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat After his retirement from playing in 2016, Allen became a minority owner of the Bucks. In 2018, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Uconn’s Caron Butler
Caron Butler was drafted 10th overall by the Miami Heat in the 2002 NBA Draft He played with the Heat until 2005, when he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He was then traded to the Washington Wizards in 2008, where he spent four seasons before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2012. He signed with the Clippers in 2013 and played there for two seasons before signing with the Sacramento Kings in 2015. He was traded back to the Wizards in 2016 and spent one season there before being traded back to the Kings, where he currently plays.
Uconn’s Emeka Okafor
Now 33 years old, Okafor last played in the NBA during the 2012-2013 season with the Washington Wizards He was the second overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats and went on to have a solid nine-year career in the league. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2005 and averaged a double-double for his career with 10.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game After several injuries derailed his career, Okafor decided to walk away from basketball in 2013 and has since been working as a financial analyst.
Uconn’s Charlie Villanueva
Charlie Villanueva was drafted by the Toronto Raptors with the seventh overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft He played two seasons with the Raptors before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2007. After six seasons with the Bucks, Villanueva became a Free Agent and signed with the Detroit Pistons in 2013. He played one season with the Pistons before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2014. He was waived by the Mavericks in 2015 and has not plays in the NBA since.
