The 2017-2018 Men’s Basketball Team

The 2017-2018 Men’s basketball team at West Georgia is looking to build on the success of last year’s team. The team is led by Head Coach Nate Walz, who is entering his second season at the helm of the program. The team is made up of a mix of experienced and talented players, including seniors Jamal Bryant and Maurice Rivers. The team looks to compete for a conference championship and make a run in the NCAA tournament

Men’s Basketball Head Coach

West Georgia head men’s basketball coach Will Staley enters his third season at the helm of the program in 2019-20. In his two seasons, Staley has led the Wolves to a combined 38-15 record, including a school-record 27 wins in 2018-19. Under his leadership, West Georgia has also claimed back-to-back regular season Gulf South conference championships and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Men’s Basketball Assistant Coaches

The West Georgia Wolves men’s Basketball team has announced their assistant coaches for the 2019-2020 Season Rounding out the staff are Ty Harrelson, Darryl Felder, and Kelsey Shaw.

Head coach Michael Coppola said of his staff, “I am very fortunate to have such a great group of Assistant coaches They each bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program, and I know they’ll do a great job of helping our team reach its potential.”

Harrelson comes to West Georgia after spending last season as an Assistant Coach at Barton College. Prior to Barton, he was an assistant coach at Greensboro College for two seasons. Felder spent the last four seasons as head coach at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia

Men’s Basketball Support Staff

The West Georgia Men’s Basketball support staff consists of four main members who each play a vital role in the team’s success both on and off the court.

Head coach Jody Wright enters his second season at the helm of the program, looking to build on the momentum from last year’s campaign. He is joined by assistant coaches Jason Polykoff and Steve Masten, as well as director of operations Chris Reynolds.

Wright came to West Georgia after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Auburn, where he helped the Tigers to a 96-54 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to his time at Auburn, Wright was Head Coach at Tuskegee for 12 seasons, compiling a 271-87 overall record and leading the Golden Tigers to nine 20-win seasons and eight NCAA Division II tournament appearances.

Men’s Basketball Alumni

The West Georgia men’s Basketball Program has produced a number of talented players who have gone on to have successful careers at the collegiate and professional levels. Here is a look at some of the program’s most notable alumni.

Moses Malone: A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame Malone played for West Georgia from 1974 to 1976. He was a two-time All-American and led the Braves to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1976. Malone went on to enjoy a successful 21-year career in the NBA, winning one MVP Award and three championships.

Dominique Wilkins: Wilkins played for West Georgia from 1979 to 1981, averaging 21.6 points per game He was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 1982 and went on to have a Hall of Fame career, earning nine All-Star selections and winning two slam dunk contests.

Mike Bibby: Bibby played for West Georgia from 1996 to 1998, leading the team to back-to-back NCAA Division II tournament appearances. He was drafted second overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1998 and enjoyed a 14-year NBA Career earning one All-Star selection.

Men’s Basketball History

Since the inaugural season in 1969, the West Georgia men’s basketball team has been a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Division II ranks. The team has won four Division II National Championships and appeared in the NCAA Division II tournament 27 times. The West Georgia men’s Basketball team is also a perennial powerhouse in the Gulf South Conference winning 12 conference championships.

Men’s Basketball Records

The West Georgia Wolves men’s basketball team has a long and storied history, dating back to the early days of the program in the 1950s. The team has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years, but they have always been a competitive force in the NCAA Division II ranks.

The Wolves have made nine appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament, with their most recent appearance coming in 2019. They have also won four conference championships in their history, with their most recent title coming in 2010.
