The 1982 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team represented the University of North Carolina in the 1982 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season The team’s Head Coach was Dean Smith who was in his 20th season at UNC. The Tar Heels played their home games at the Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill North Carolina and were a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference

They finished the season with a 2610 record (95 in the ACC), and won their sixth ACC championship. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and defeated James Madison and Virginia before losing to Alabama-Birmingham in the Sweet Sixteen Michael Jordan was named ACC Rookie of the Year, and James Worthy was named ACC Player of the Year.

After winning the NCAA championship in 1981, the Tar Heels finished the 1981-82 regular season with an overall record of 28-3 and a conference record of 14-2. They won the ACC tournament for the second consecutive year and then defeated James Madison Virginia Commonwealth, and Houston to advance to the Elite Eight of the 1982 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament There they lost to Louisville, who went on to win the tournament. Upon losing in the Elite Eight, UNC finishes the season with an overall record of 30-4.

The Tar Heels played their home games at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill North Carolina and were a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference

The team finished with a 267 overall record and a 133 conference record. They finished the season ranked No. 7 in both the AP Poll and Coaches’ Poll. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as one of four ACC teams, and they were seeded No. 6 in the East region. They defeated James Madison in the First Round before losing to Boston College in the Second Round.

During the season, freshman Michael Jordan joined the team and went on to be named ACC Rookie of the Year after averaging 13.4 points per game on 53 percent shooting from the field and 82 percent shooting from the Free Throw Line as well as socialism steals per game over 29 games played [1][2] Fellow freshman Sam Perkins also averaged in double figures with 10 points per game [1] Junior James Worthy led UNC with 17 points per game [1]

The 1982 UNC basketball team finished the season with a record of 29-4, 16-2 in the ACC. The team was coached by Dean Smith and led by junior All-American James Worthy and freshman Michael Jordan Tar Heels won their first 14 games of the season, including victories over top-ranked Virginia and fourth-ranked Louisville. After losing two ACC games, UNC won their last 10 games of the season, including the ACC tournament championship. UNC then entered the NCAA tournament as the number one seed in the East Region. After winning their first two games handily, UNC faced James Madison in the Sweet Sixteen The Dukes gave UNC a scare, but the Tar Heels prevailed 73-68. In the Elite Eight, UNC faced Alonzo Mourning and Ralph Sampson’s top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers Virginia had beaten UNC twice during the Regular Season but Worthy scored 28 points and Jordan added 18 as UNC won 72-63 to reach the Final Four for the sixth time in school history.

The 1982 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team represented the University of North Carolina as an independent during the 1982 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season The team was led by head coach Dean Smith, in his 10th year, and played their Home Games at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference They finished the season with a 2710 record overall and a 124 record in conference play winning ACC regular season for the 9th time in school history.

The Tar Heels entered the season as defending National Champions after winning their second NCAA championship in 1981 over Ralph Sampson and Virginia. They were looking to become only the second team to ever repeat as National Champions at that time. The team started off the season 110 before losing three straight games against top-5 ranked foes Louisville, Duke, and Virginia. The Tar Heels then proceeded to win 16 of their next 17 games, which included another matchup with Virginia in Charlottesville that they won handily by 20 points. The Tar Heels then lost two more close games on the road against Clemson and Georgia Tech to finish the Regular Season 265 overall and 114 in ACC play, good enough for first place in the ACC regular season standings.

In the ACC Tournament, UNC defeated Wake Forest in the quarterfinals before losing a close game to Virginia in the semifinals. UNC then went on to lose to Georgia Tech in the 3rd place game, finishing their tournament run with a 12 record.

The Tar Heels received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament as a #3 seed behind DePaul and Louisville. In their first round matchup, UNC cruised past Iona by 30 points en route to an easy victory. They then faced off against James Madison in the second round, winning another easy game by 21 points to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for a third consecutive year. USC was their opponent in the Sweet Sixteen matchup, with UNC coming out on top again by double digits with a 12 point victory. That win sent them back to Greensboro Coliseum for an Elite Eight showdown withPatrick Ewingand Georgetown; a game which many have considered one of if notthe best college basketball game ever played. After Cole’s last-second putback gave UNC a one-point lead late in overtime, Georgetown had one final possession to try and win it; however, Sleepy Floyd’s jumper rimmed out at the buzzer and UNC held on for a 63-62 victory to advance to their fifth Final Four in school history up until that point. In their Final Four matchup against Houston (a team led by future NBA Star Clyde Drexler), UNC won handily by 15 points thanks to 19 points from Worthy en route to his second consecutive National Championship Game appearance(and third overall).
