NEC Basketball is the best in the Northeast. We have the best players, the best coaches, and the best fans. We are the defending conference champions and we have won the conference tournament four times in the last five years. We have produced two NBA All-Stars and our players have gone on to play in the NBA, Europe, and Asia. We are a family and we are committed to our craft.

The conference is home to some of the most successful programs in the country, including perennial powerhouses like Syracuse, UConn, and Pittsburgh. These schools attract top-level talent from all over the country, and they have the resources to compete at the highest level
In addition to the traditional powerhouses, the NEC is also home to a number of up-and-coming programs that are quickly making a name for themselves. Schools like Monmouth and Liu Brooklyn have become regular contenders in recent years and they’re only getting better. The East Conference (NEC) is a collegiate athletic conference consisting of ten schools affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. Northeastern United States athletics programs make up the membership of the NEC.
NEC Basketball is considered by many to be one of the best mid-major basketball conferences in the country. The conference has sent multiple teams to the NCAA tournament in recent years including four in 2019.

With so much talent coming out of the NEC, it’s no surprise that there are a handful of players who stand out above the rest. Here are the best NEC basketball players of all time.
George Gervin: Often referred to as “The Iceman,” Gervin is one of the most prolific scorers in Basketball History He played for several teams in his storied career, but he is best remembered for his time with the San Antonio Spurs. Gervin was a nine-time NBA All-Star and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
Julius Erving One of the most iconic figures in Basketball History “Dr. J” was a trailblazer for athletes who wanted to play above the rim. He popularized some of basketball’s most acrobatic moves, and he did it all with style and grace. Erving won an NCAA championship with UMass in 1974 before going on to have a Hall-of-Fame career in both the ABA and NBA.
Moses Malone: A three-time NBA MVP Malone was one of the most dominating big men to ever play the game He was an unstoppable force on both ends of the court, and he led several teams to playoff success throughout his 21-year career. Malone was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Bob Hurley Sr. – Hurley has been the Head Coach at St. Anthony’s High School for over 40 years. During his time at St. Anthony’s, he has won 27 State Championships 23 New Jersey state titles, and 4 National Championships He has also been named National Coach of the Year on three occasions.
Jim Calhoun – Calhoun is the head coach at the University of Connecticut He has led Connecticut to 3 NCAA Championships 5 Final Fours, 15 NCAA tournament appearances, and 11 conference championships. He has also been named National Coach of the Year three times.
Jay Wright – Wright is the Head Coach at Villanova University He has led Villanova to 2 NCAA Championships, 3 Final Fours, 7 NCAA tournament appearances, and 6 conference championships. He has also been named National Coach of the Year twice.
Mike Brey – Brey is the Head coach at Notre Dame University. He has led Notre Dame to 1 NCAA Championship, 2 Final Fours, 8 NCAA tournament appearances, and 5 conference championships.

The Best NEC Basketball Moments
The East Conference (NEC) is one of the most competitive and exciting NCAA Division I basketball conferences. There are many great moments in NEC basketball history but here are some of the best:
-In 2006, Sacred Heart shocked the world by winning the NEC Tournament as a No. 9 seed. This was the first time a nine-seed had ever won the NEC Tournament, and it was a moment that will never be forgotten by Pioneers fans.
-In 2010, Robert Morris made history by becoming the first team to ever win four consecutive NEC Championships. The Colonials cemented their place in NEC lore with this impressive feat, and they are still the only team to have won four straight titles.
-In 2016, Mount St. Mary’s made a miraculous run to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 16 seed. The Mountaineers defeated New Orleans in the First Four before nearly upsetting eventual National Champion Villanova in the Round of 64. This was one of the greatest moments in NEC history, and it proved that anything is possible in March Madness
The Best NEC Basketball Championships
The Northeast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament is the annual conference Basketball Championship tournament for the Northeast Conference. The tournament has been held every year since 1986. It is a single-elimination tournament and is traditionally held at sites that are neutral to all NEC schools.
The winner of the tournament receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament The NEC Tournament has been won by eight different schools, with Sacred Heart winning the most championships with five. The current champions are the Robert Morris Colonials, who have won four times overall.
The Future of NEC Basketball
The Northeast Conference is an NCAA Division I collegiate Athletic Conference whose full members are currently located in the northeastern United States Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson Sacred Heart Saint Francis (PA), St. Francis Brooklyn, and Wagner are charter members of the NEC. The conference currently sponsors 20 sports (10 men’s and 10 women’s) and holds Division I membership in basketball and soccer.
The conference was founded in 1981 when Holy Cross joined after departing from the ECAC-Metro Conference. In 1982–83, five more schools joined the conference: Hartford, LIU Brooklyn, Robert Morris Seton Hall and Towson State. Later, in 1988–89, Northeastern left to join what is now known as the Colonial Athletic Association while George Mason departed to join what would later become the Atlantic 10 Conference (AEC). Towson State was also a charter member of the AEC.
As of September 1st, 2017 NEC will have full membership in all 20 of its sponsored sports after adding Old Dominion in field hockey and Monmouth in swimming & diving. The conference also added men’s & women’s outdoor track & field as conference-sponsored sports beginning with the 2017–18 season; however Old Dominion will not sponsor either sport. This will give the NEC a total of 22 sports for the 2018–19 season.

NEC basketball is known for its strong defense, tough competition, and aggressive style of play. Many of the conference’s teams are known for their “press” defense, which can cause turnovers and create easy scoring opportunities.
The conference has been dominated by Syracuse in recent years, but other schools have had success as well. UConn won the National Championship in 2011, while Butler made back-to-back appearances in the National Championship game in 2010 and 2011.
