The Worst Basketball Team Names of All Time
Contents
From the “Tragic City Rollers” to the “New Jersey Turnpikes”, these are some of the worst basketball team names in history.
The Charlotte Bobcats
The Charlotte Bobcats were an American professional Basketball team that was based in Charlotte, North Carolina The team began play as an expansion team in the 2004-05 season. They played their home games at the Time Warner Cable Arena. The team’s flagship radio station was WFNZ.
The Bobcats were owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan who purchased the team in 2010. The team struggled throughout their history, posting a record of only 138-244. In 2013, the Bobcats were renamed to the Charlotte Hornets reviving the name of Charlotte’s original NBA Franchise
The Los Angeles Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the worst basketball teams in the NBA for many years. They have never won a championship, and their best season was in 2014 when they won only 45 games. Their name is often derided as being one of the worst in all of sports.
The Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies are an American professional basketball team based in Memphis, Tennessee. The Grizzlies compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division The Grizzlies play their home games at FedExForum. The team is owned by Robert Pera. The Grizzlies are the only team in the major professional North American leagues located in the city’s metropolitan area
The team was established as the Vancouver Grizzlies an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1995–96 season. After relocating to Memphis, the team took its current name. The Grizzlies played their first game in Vancouver on November 3, 1995, losing to the Atlanta Hawks 136–118. In their six seasons in Vancouver, the Grizzlies compiled a record of 101–359, winning no more than 22 games and losing no fewer than 60 games in any of those seasons.
The Minnesota Timberwolves
In the history of Professional Basketball there have been some truly terrible team names. From the infamous New Jersey Nets to the puzzling Phoenix Suns there are plenty of teams that seem to have missed the mark when it comes to finding a name that represents their city or region. But among all the bad names, there is one team that stands out as having THE WORST name in basketball: the Minnesota Timberwolves
What makes the Timberwolves’ name so bad? For starters, it doesn’t make any sense. There are no timberwolves in Minnesota (or anywhere else in the Lower 48 states, for that matter). The team’s name was chosen in a Name-the-Team contest in 1986, and while it’s possible that the winning entry was meant to refer to Native American lore (there are several tribes with ties to Minnesota), it’s more likely that the contest organizers were just looking for a catchy, made-up word. Either way, it’s a terrible name for a team.
It gets worse. The Timberwolves logo is an abstract howling wolf head that looks more like a cartoon character than a ferocious predator. And the team’s colors (light blue, magenta and gray) are an eyesore. It’s no wonder that many fans refer to the Timberwolves as the “Timberpups” – they might as well be an expansion team in
The New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional Basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division The team was established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the franchise temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City where they spent two seasons officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The team returned to New Orleans full-time for the 2007–08 season. On January 24, 2013, the franchise announced it would rename itself the Pelicans, effective after the conclusion of the 2012–13 season. Their achievements include one playoff appearance (2018) and one playoff win (2020), which came after defeating defending champions and favorites Golden State Warriors in a four-game sweep during their first ever playoff appearance in franchise history.
The Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings are perhaps the most infamous example of a team namesake change gone wrong. In 1985, the team was known as the Kansas City Kings. But when they relocated to Sacramento, California in 1985, they changed their name to the Sacramento Kings The problem? The city of Sacramento is nowhere near a king. In fact, it’s not even in the same country as a king. This gaffe caused many fans to lose respect for the team, and it’s widely considered one of the worst basketball team name changes of all time.
The Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz is widely considered to be one of the worst basketball team names of all time. The name was selected through a fan vote in 1974, beating out other finalists such as the Cougars, Fate, and Scorpions. While the Jazz name may have been initially popular with fans, it has since become a source of mockery and derision.Critics point to the fact that Utah is not particularly known for its jazz music scene, and argue that the name is generic and uninspired. Others have simply found it to be an odd and unpromising choice for a Sports Team In any case, the Utah Jazz remains one of the most controversial team names in Basketball History
The Washington Wizards
The Washington Wizards are widely regarded as one of the worst basketball team names of all time. The franchise was previously known as the Washington Bullets but changed their name in 1997 in an attempt to distance themselves from the negative connotations associated with Gun Violence However, the new name was widely panned, with many critics asserting that it was bland and uninspired. In addition, the team’s logo – a wizard holding a basketball – was widely mocked, and is often cited as one of the ugliest in professional sports Ultimately, the name change failed to turn around the franchise’s fortunes, and they continue to be one of the worst teams in the NBA.
The Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets were an expansion team in the NBA in 1988. The team was named after the insect, which is native to the area. The franchise struggled in its early years, finishing last in their division in each of their first seven seasons. They did not make the playoffs until 1997, when they reached the Conference Finals The Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002 and became the New Orleans Pelicans
The Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets have long been considered one of the worst basketball teams in the NBA. But their name is also considered one of the worst in all of professional sports
The Nets got their start as the New Jersey Americans in 1967, playing in Teaneck, New Jersey. When they moved to New York in 1968, they became the New York Nets But it wasn’t until they moved to Brooklyn in 2012 that they became the Brooklyn Nets
Some fans believe that the name “Nets” is a reference to the netting used to keep balls from going out of bounds. But it’s more likely that the name was chosen because it was short and easy to remember.
But whatever the reason for the name, it’s not a good one. It’s not catchy, it’s not creative, and it doesn’t really say anything about the team or the city they represent. In fact, “Nets” is just about the worst name a basketball team could have.
