Lakeland University’s Baseball Program has a long and rich history, dating back to the early days of the school. The program has been through many iterations over the years, but it has always been a force to be reckoned with in Division II baseball.
In recent years Lakeland has become one of the premier Division II baseball programs in the country. The team has won numerous conference championships and made deep runs in the NCAA Division II tournament. In 2018, the team made it all the way to the Division II World Series where they ultimately lost to powerhouse Florida Southern in the Championship game
Despite coming up just short of winning a National Championship Lakeland’s 2018 season was one of the most successful in school history. The team’s success on the field has helped put Lakeland University on the map as a top destination for Division II baseball players

Lakeland University’s baseball coaching staff are no strangers to success. They have led the team to nine NCAA Division II World Series appearances and six National Championships The team is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Head coach Ed Kohlwey has been with Lakeland for 20 years, and under his guidance, the team has racked up an impressive 936-354-3 record. He has been named Coach of the Year four times by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Associate Head Coach Steve Anderson has been with Kohlwey for all 20 years, and together they have built a program that is the envy of many schools in Division II.
assistant coaches Dan Klinkert and Paul Mabrey round out a staff that has proven time and time again that it knows how to win at the highest level of Division II baseball. The team trains in a newly renovated, state-of-the-art facility that includes a weight room, locker room training room, and batting cages. They also have access to the latest in baseball technology, including video analysis software and high-speed pitching machines. In the past five years, the team has won four National Championships and has been to the College World Series nine times. The team’s success is due in large part to its rigorous schedule, which includes games against some of the best teams in the nation.
The upcoming season is no different, as the team will play several games against Division I opponents. Since the Division II Baseball Tournament started in 1973, Lakeland University has been one of its most successful programs. The school has made the tournament 29 times and been crowned National Champion on five occasions.
In recent years Lakeland has continued to be one of the nation’s top Division II baseball programs. The team made the postseason tournament in each of the last three years, reaching the semifinals in 2017 and 2018.

Joe Girardi, Class of 1986
Girardi is currently the manager of the New York Yankees who have won the World Series under his leadership three times (2009, ’11, ’17). Prior to his managerial career, Girardi was a catcher for 15 seasons with the Chicago Cubs Colorado Rockies St. Louis Cardinals and Yankees. He was a member of the Yankees’ 1996 World Series winning team and won three Silver Slugger Awards during his playing career.
Tommy attended Lakeland University on a baseball scholarship and is now in his fourth season as head coach of the school’s Division I team. In 2017, his squad made it to the College World Series for the first time in program history.
Jason McLeod, Class of 1996
McLeod is currently the Senior Vice President/General Manager of the Chicago Cubs He has been with the organization since 2011 and was instrumental in building the team that won the 2016 World Series – their first championship in 108 years. Prior to joining the Cubs, McLeod spent time with the Boston Red Sox organization, where he helped construct two World Series winning teams (2004, ’07).
