Why the team decided to go in a new direction.

The Ohio State baseball team has a new Head Coach for the 2020 season. Todd Schilf was hired to replace Greg Beals, who led the Buckeyes to four Big Ten regular-season titles and two conference tournament championships in his nine seasons at the helm.

Why the change?

“We wanted to go in a different direction,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. “We had some success, but we also had some struggles recently. We just felt like it was time for a change.”

Schilf, who spent the last five seasons as the Head coach at Wright State inherits a Buckeyes team that went 27-28 overall and 11-13 in the Big Ten last season. Beals was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year three times (2011, 2013, 2016), but he never led Ohio State to an NCAA regional championship.

Coach’s credentials and experience.

The type of team he plans to build.

In his first year as head coach Greg Beals plans to instill a new culture within the Ohio State baseball program and build a team that can compete for championships on a yearly basis.

“It starts with the way we carry ourselves, the way we present ourselves to the public, the way we go about our daily work,” Beals said. “I want to create an environment where our players and staff are held accountable to the highest standards.”

Beals comes to Ohio State after a successful six-year run at Ball State where he amassed a record of 235-196 (.546) and led the Cardinals to three Mid-American Conference regular season championships and one MAC tournament title. He was named MAC Coach of the Year three times (2011, 2013, 2015).

The challenges he faces in taking over a struggling team.

Entering his first season as head baseball coach of The Ohio State University Greg Beals is no stranger to challenges. In his previous coaching position at Bowling Green State University he took over a team that had not had a winning season in twelve years. He led them to three consecutive Mid-American conference championships and NCAA Regional appearances. Now, he takes on the task of rebuilding the Ohio State Baseball program.

The Buckeyes have not made an NCAA Regional appearance since 2016, and have not won an NCAA Regional game since 2014. They have not been to an NCAA Super Regional since 1999. To put it bluntly, the team has been struggling for quite some time. So, what does Beals hope to accomplish in his first season at the helm?

“It’s going to be a process,” Beals said when asked about his expectations for the team this year. “We’re going to lay a foundation of what it means to be a Buckeye baseball player – what our culture is going to be.”

Beals inherits a team that went 15-34 last season and finished last in the Big Ten Conference with a 6-24 record. That record included some tough losses, such as getting swept by conference rival Michigan at home. The Buckeyes also lost 13 straight games at one point during the season. So, there is certainly Room for Improvement

One thing Beals will look to do is instill a sense of urgency in his players from day one. “We need to understand that we have an opportunity here – we have an opportunity to change the culture of Ohio State baseball ” Beals said. “That starts with every individual in our program.”

He also wants his team to play with more passion and energy on the field. “We want our guys competing with everything they’ve got for 27 outs,” Beals said. “We want them playing hard for each other.”

The challenges facing Beals are certainly daunting, but he is confident that he can turn things around at Ohio State Only time will tell if he is successful.

The support he’s received from the university.

“We’re here to win,” Coach Hutcheson said. “I expect my team to play hard every game and never give up. We’re going to hustle and play Smart Baseball If we do those things, we’ll be in a good position to win.”

The coach also discussed his philosophy on player development

“My job is to help these young men reach their full potential, both as baseball players and as people,” he said. “I want them to have a positive experience while they’re here, and I want to help them grow and develop both on and off the field.”

Coach Hutcheson seems like a perfect fit for Ohio State University’s Baseball Program and we can’t wait to see what he does with the team this season!

The goals he has for the program.

It’s no secret that new Ohio State Baseball coach Wayne Krivsky has big shoes to fill.

Krivsky, who was hired in June to replace retiring coach Greg Beals, inherits a program that has won four Big Ten Championships in the last five years and made five NCAA tournament appearances in that span.

The challenge for Krivsky will be to keep the Buckeyes at that level of success, and he’s confident he can do it.

“My goals for the program are to keep us nationally relevant and to win a National Championship ” Krivsky said. “I think we have the talent and commitment from our players to do both of those things.”

Krivsky comes to Ohio State after a successful run as the head coach at Wright State where he led the Raiders to four Horizon League championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances in his six seasons.

His thoughts on the current state of college baseball
