With all of these changes, it can be hard to keep track of who is on which team and what to expect from them. This guide will introduce you to the new members of the Pacific baseball league and give you an idea of what to expect from them this season.

The Roster

The roster is set and the season is just around the corner. Here is a breakdown of who is who and what to expect from your 2019 Pacific Baseball Team

Pitching:

Justin Verlander- Recently acquired from the Astros, Verlander will be looking to anchor the pitching staff and lead the team to a World Series title. The ace of the pitching staff, Verlander has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for over a decade. Expect him to be in the running for the Cy Young Award once again this season.

Gerrit Cole- Another recent addition to the team, Cole comes over from Houston to form one of the best pitching duos in baseball. Cole had a breakout year last season, finishing second in Cy Young voting. He will look to build on that success this season and help lead the team to a championship.

Madison Bumgarner- The veteran of the staff, Bumgarner has been with the team for several years now. He is a former World Series MVP and has been one of the best postseason pitchers in history. Bumgarner will look to provide leadership and mentorship to the younger pitchers on the staff while also contributing on the mound.

Bullpen:

Kenley Jansen- The closers role is always a important one and Jansen will be tasked with filling that role this season. He is a experienced reliever who has been one of the best closers in baseball over the past few years. Expect him to be called upon in high pressure situations and come through in big moments.

Pedro Baez- A versatile reliever, Baez can pitch in any situation. He will likely see some high leverage innings this season as well as some lower leveraged innings when needed. Either way, he will be counted on to get important outs throughout the course of the season.
Baez had a strong 2018 campaign and will look to build on that this season

The Coaching Staff

This year’s Coaching Staff for the Pacific baseball team is:

Head Coach: John Smith

Assistant Coaches: Jerry Reynolds and Joe Lefebvre

John Smith enters his first season as Head Coach of the Pacific baseball team Prior to Pacific, Coach Smith spent four years as an Assistant Coach at the University of San Francisco As a former player, Coach Smith has experience at every level of baseball. He played in the College World Series with Pepperdine University and was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1986. After spending four years in the minors, he had a brief stint with the Oakland Athletics in 1991. In addition to his coaching assignments, Coach Smith has also served as a scout for Major League Baseball

Jerry Reynolds returns for his second season as assistant coach at Pacific. Prior to his arrival at Pacific, Coach Reynolds served as an assistant coach at Santa Clara University for three seasons. During his playing career, Jerry was a member of the San Francisco Giants organization for eight seasons (1982-1989). He also played for the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles organizations. After retiring from baseball, Jerry became a minor league manager and coached for eight seasons in the Giants’ organization. He has also been a television broadcaster for both the Giants and Orioles.

Joe Lefebvre enters his first season as assistant coach at Pacific after serving as head coach at Saint Mary’s College last season. Prior to Saint Mary’s, Coach Lefebvre was an assistant coach at UC Davis for four seasons (2008-2011). During his playing career, Joe was a member of the New York Yankees organization for six seasons (1979-1984). After retiring from baseball, Joe became a Minor League manager and coached for fourteen seasons in the Yankees’, Mariners’, and Padres’ organizations.

The Schedule

The Stadium

The Fans

The most dedicated and vocal fans in all of baseball, the 12th Man takes over Safeco Field whenever the Mariners are in town. You’ll find them in the Upper Deck in right field, where they hang out and wave their ” groceries ” ( Big League jargon for outfielders who don’t hit much ). The fans are also known for their ” wave ” – an ocean-like movement of bodies that encircles the stadium – which usually starts after the seventh-inning stretch.

The media plays an important role in the way the public perceives the Game of Baseball In recent years there has been an increase in the number of media outlets that cover the sport. This has led to increased coverage of the game, which can be both positive and negative.
