America East Basketball Standings: A Comprehensive Guide
The America East Conference is an American collegiate Athletic Conference whose member schools are located in the Northeastern United States The conference’s membership is composed of nine colleges and universities that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I, with its men’s and women’s basketball teams competing in the Division I Basketball Championship
The conference was founded in 1979 as the Eastern College Athletic Conference North, a men’s basketball-only conference. The charter members were Binghamton University, the University of Hartford, Maine Maritime Academy, the University of Maine New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University), Norwich University, Plattsburgh State University of New York, St. Anselm College, and Vermont Technical College The conference remained unchanged until 1985 when Maine Maritime left to join the NCAA Division III New England Women’s Basketball Association (now Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference). In 1991, the conference expanded to include women’s basketball when Vermont joined.
In 2005, UMBC became the first and only America East school recruited by a major Division I conference when it was invited to join the Atlantic Coast Conference beginning with the 200607 season UMBC competed as a full member of that league. Before UMBC joined in 200607 all nine America East schools participated in both mens and Womens Basketball with each school having one vote on changes to both policies or structure within America East; following UMBCs defection this process changed so that each school had two votes: one on changes affecting just mens policy/structure and one on changes affecting just womens policy/structure within America Eastthus giving more equal weight to both genders’ programs within decision making for America East as a whole despite there being only seven participants in America East Mens Basketball after UMBC left for the ACC.”
